Al Gore - An example of great strategic leader prior to 2010 and still today would be Al Gore, Al gore leveraged his political success to become a powerful environmentalist. His work moved global warming to a front burner issue (pun intended) not only for America, but also for the global commons. (Bill)

Over six decades of service, Jerry Brown has been making an impact as a strategic leader. Long before becoming governor of California for the second time in 2010, Jerry was a symbol of “Post-Watergate” politics – a respected progressive who signed the landmark California Agricultural Labor Relations Act bill supported by Cesar Chavez. He pioneered the concept of small individual donations in his unsuccessful run for president in 1992, refusing to accept contributions over $100. Later, as a multiple-term mayor of Oakland, Jerry was known to be exceptionally accessible to citizens, focusing his administration on reducing crime, revitalizing downtown, encouraging educational innovation, and promoting the arts.
Gloria Steinem has been an advocate and strategic leader for women’s rights since 1963 when, working as a journalist, she took a job as a “Playboy Bunny” and then wrote an expose article publicizing the exploitative working conditions of women in the business. Gloria has been an unrelenting feminist activist for women’s rights in the work-place, reproductive rights, same-sex marriage, transgender rights, and more. She has fought for the rights of women and the LGBT communities in every strategic and tactical way possible; writing articles, speaking out, founding organizations, and actively supporting the campaigns of politicians such as Obama, Hillary Clinton, and Bernie Sanders. In 1972 Gloria co-founded the popular feminist magazine Ms. and has received numerous honors and awards for her leadership of the feminist movement including induction into the National Women’s Hall of Fame in 1993. However, the expansion and supply chain strategy Sam Walton implemented is something I will always admire. By focusing on the delivery system to stores Sam Walton was able to create an experience where items were always in stock and at the lowest price. The ability to not only maintain, but leverage, his direct distribution strategy through explosive growth is a beacon of one plan, relentless implementation. His overall strategy may not be something I agree with personally but as an example of developing a strategy and successfully implementing, I see few examples that outshine his.
Sonia Sotomayor became the first Latina Supreme Court judge and third female justice in May of 2009. She has been described as hard working, smart, low profile, compassionate, fair, and courageous. She did not shy away from the tough cases and positions in order to drive change. Her first job out of Yale Law School was the assistant district attorney under New York County District Attorney Robert Morgenthau starting in 1979. Her peers at Yale did not understand why she wanted to take that job, but she had a passion for bringing law and order to the streets of New York. Not shying away from the unpopular choices to drive change is the sign of a true leader. (Amy Burns)

Judith Faulkner is the CEO of Epic Systems, one of the largest Electronic Health (or Medical) Record (HER/EMR) systems. She started it just out of graduate school, 30 years ago, while working in computer science at the University of Wisconsin. One department asked her to create a system that would allow them to track patient data and the rest is history. Epic Systems now hold medical records of 54% of patients in the US and 2.5% of patients worldwide. It is used at many of the hospitals and medical groups in Seattle, as well as across the country and the world. Instead of moving the company to a technology hub like Seattle or San Jose, she stayed in WI and by building a Google-like campus, she’s essentially built a city where none previously existed because a whole hospitality industry has sprung up to take care of those working on the campus and its worldwide visitors. She understands that the success of her system(s) depends on provider employees understanding how to properly use them, thus a certain number of employees from each provider (depending on size) are designated “SuperUsers” and must travel to WI for intensive training. She’s not resting on her laurels either - 50% of their operating margin is invested in Research and Development, unlike her competitors who invest between 10 and 25% (2015). Sheila Nishimoto

Herb Kelleher founder of Southwest airlines. Created a company 1971 the openly advertised that he put employees first, customers second, and shareholders third. This is typically unheard of at the time as the most other companies boast that the customer are always first. Herb believed that if he treated his employees right and kept his employees happy, then the customers would be treated very well as a result. I worked for Southwest in 1996 and it was very common to see Herb working the "regular persons job" to include baggage handler, on the busiest days to show he is in it with his employees.
