Stage 1 Prewriting

Definition of Prewriting: The planning stage of writing and putting down on paper what you as the writer want to write about. This includes topic of writing, purpose of writing, and organizing thoughts about what you are going to write about.

My Experience: My experience with this stage of the writing process is non existent. I would just start writing with no plan or purpose. I can say that my process of writing made it very hard and my experience in writing was not enjoyable.

Observation: While student teaching, I have observed the cooperating teacher give a broad topic for the students to write which was "What am I an Expert At?" The students prepared graphic organizers using a web with their topics in the center. Some topics include baking, gaming, and running. The students webbed out ideas of what makes them an expert at it. Using graphic organizers really helped the students get their thoughts out on paper before they begin writing.

Definition of Publishing: Writers will publish their final writing piece by using computers, handwriting, or other technological way.

My Experience: When finalizing and publishing my writings, I would type of my writing. I would follow the necessary criteria given for publishing and not turn away from that.

Observation: In my student teaching, we have given the students creative ways to publish their writings. We have had students type up with stories in google docs. Along with that we had students create a title page of their stories in google draw. Finally, we had the students summarize their stories and voice record their summaries with a QR reader. The students have really enjoyed the use of technology.

Stage 4 Editing

Definition of Editing: Students correct the paper for spelling, punctuation, and other writing conventions. Student and teacher conferences are important for helping the student succeed in this task.

My Experience: When it came to editing my papers; I would get really upset about it. I didn't like to see so much red pen on my paper by the teacher and the remarks saying "good story but have a lot of mistakes to fix". This was not motivating for me as a student.

Observation: I have found in my student teaching that this stage in the writing process is negative for the students too. We conduct student-teacher conferences on writing. We read over their stories together out loud. Together we will work fixing sentence structures, punctuation, and spelling. Some students found the conferences productive and learned from them. Other students struggled with this stage as a negative. Teachers had to encourage these students that this a learning and we want their final writings to be great.

Stage 3 Revising

Definition of Revising: Writers will clarify and reshape their ideas from their story. It is important for the writer to get feedback on their writing and ideas, so that you can become a better writer.

My Experience: When it came to revising my papers; this stage was not really completed. I would go straight to editing and not to revising my paper at all. I wouldn't share my paper with other peers for writing advice about my writing.

Observation: In my student teaching, I have not seen this stage in the writing process present in the classroom. It seems we skip right to the editing stage. In the reading of Tompkin, I really enjoyed the revising groups where the students read their stories and the listeners offer advice and compliments on their writing. I feel that this stage would be really important and help with the editing stage not being so negative for students.

Stage 2 Drafting

Definition of Drafting: Taking ideas/topics and putting them into words and sentences while writing without distraction. It is not important to focus on punctuation but writing down thoughts. Also, during this time it is important to focus and create attention grabbers that will draw the audience in on the story.

My Experience: Drafting this the stage I begin when I am writing. I sit down and start writing with no interruption by getting everything out of my head and on to paper. Sometimes what I am writing makes sense while other times it is just a mess on a paper. I have to say that I don't think of attention grabbers when I am drafting, I typically do that in the revising stage.

Observation: In my student teaching, the cooperating teacher wrote down definitions of attention grabbers and examples for the students to see or use when writing their stories. Some examples were opening with a question, onemonepeia, or a joke. Students great job in creating these attention grabbers for their stories.
