Typically yellow fever is endemic to subtropical/tropical areas of Africa, Central and South America. It is much more common in these areas. Yet large outbreaks can occur when infected people who have traveled abroad return to a large populated areas with high mosquito density and infect the mosquitoes in the area which in turn infect other humans in the area who are not likely vaccinated due to lack of risk.

There is a very effective vaccination for yellow fever but if you do not live in a region where yellow fever is a common issue there are several easier methods to protect yourself from this disease. If you are spending time outside wear insect repellent, or light a citronella candle. There are also vector control programs, if you have a large mosquito population around your home you can contact a control program to help eliminate these issues.

Unfortunately there are no proven methods to treat or cure yellow fever. Though if you have been diagnosed with yellow fever make sure to stay hydrated and get plenty of rest. Make sure you try to avoid contact with mosquitoes or any other vector which could potentially cause an outbreak.
