My Beliefs Regarding Modern Literacy by Dawn Castner

“Society is made up of various collective groups, such as the family, community, organizations, regions, nations which as Burns and Egdahl state “can be considered to possess agential capabilities: to think, judge, decide, act, reform; to conceptualize self and others as well as self's actions and interactions; and to reflect.”[10 Burns, T.R. Engdahl, E. (1998) The Social Construction of Consciousness. Part 1: Collective Consciousness and its Socio-Cultural Foundations, Journal of Consciousness Studies, 5 (1) p 77.

Cultural Differences in Milestones

Cultural differences in milestones have been observed in all developmental areas.
Once
3-year-olds develop a theory of mind (the realization that people
think), then this cognitive ability can be combined with language and
social skills. One result: Children begin to lie. They understand rules,
actions and outcomes.

Teaching Literacy

As I consider the kind of literacy teacher I am and how I include media into these practices the idiom "wax and wane" comes to mind. In our district we work on incorporating a Balanced Literacy Program. There is a serious percentage of students below the 50% in reading and a three year goal is to lower this to 20%. Learning targets are an important component to consider, as Educate is being used to monitor targets. We are fortunate to have literacy coaches working together, analyzing data, providing suggestions, and assisting with assessment and next steps. I teach literacy within the umbrella labeled; be flexible, plan, do, assess, revise. I incorporate media as I can within this framework. I have access to laptops, i pads, a smart board, and resources in Educate. The use of media might include a short video related to the content, an interactive smart notebook lesson I may have compiled for phonetic skill practice, using a laptop to view an audio/video mentor text selection for comprehension. Children might use laptops to practice fluency or to capture certain moments. Last Monday, using IPads and Cameras some of the children took snapshots of their classmates in guided reading lessons and independently focusing on quality work.
