For a lesson that would require comprehensive understanding of algebraic or geometric concepts, I would implement a day at the end of a unit that is centered around the students being introduced to a mathematical problem of an appropriate level of challenge. The students would work in small groups and apply their learning from the previous, perhaps simple lessons of the unit to critically think and solve the larger problem at hand. I think having questions drafted for them to guide their thinking would be a great way to engage their thinking through the problem-solving process. I naturally think of a secondary classroom, but this same idea can be modified for an elementary classroom.
