The bird refuses to give in to being trapped and thus always fights to be free almost as if it does not realize it cant get free. The bird is being denied freedom and free will and natural instincts. Many of the symptoms mentioned  in this article were experienced by Dante while he was in prison. These symptoms and emotions such as longing for interaction and contact may have helped forge Dantes thirst for revenge.
