In the story "The Pearl," Kino learns that greed can be a dangerous thing. He and juana receive the pearl and it was supposed to make their lives better but instead in made them worse because of people's greed for it. This can be a lesson in the modern day by thinking of it as the lottery. If you (somehow) win, the people around you may grow greedy and selfish. Same as if you had a toy and you thought it was worth a lot, but really, it's worth nothing but a dollar at a garage sale.

Scorpion: The scorpion in the beginning of "The Pearl" represents all the evil in the world.
Coyotito: Coyoytito represents all that is good and innocent in the world. He is attacked by the scorpion which is the evil.
The People of the Village: The People of the village represent that the greed and selfishness of the world. When Kino finds the pearl the people of the village automatically think about what that would mean for themselves.

Kino was a family loving man at the beginning of the story, but changes at the end of the story by becoming a hateful man and growing angry at the world while also fearing people for not being who they seem.
Juana- "He then looked for weakness in her face, for fear or irresolution, but there was none." Juana dealt with change in her life, but she didn't change herself entirely. She became a bit more assertive towards Kino and became more aware of her surroundings.
