The reason I chose andragogy is because it is something I am very interested in. I just turned 60 and work with a lot of adults in their 50s and 60s. Most of us are retired from the Air Force and were hired because of our experience and knowledge. Most of us work with computer programs that we are unfamiliar with. I have already used some of Knowles’s principles in developing a training program for new employees. The video presented above contains the 6 principles of andragogy. Some other concepts to consider when developing a training program for adults are:

1. Consider the various learning styles of your students. Some learn best visually.

2. Only teach them what they need to know. Their time is valuable.

3. Present the information is small segments and let them digest it before moving on to the segment (chunking).

4. Give the students ample time and opportunities to practice.

5. Encourage students to continuously improve their skills and try new things, lifelong learning.

6. Adults also want skill they can immediately apply.

Thanks,

Bill Nation

Rebecca Hogue Principles of Andragogy - YouTube

Knowles, M.
