I chose this book because it is a personal favorite as I discovered it while completing my diverse portrayals project with Dr. Han last semester. It is a book I can relate to as a person with a biracial and bicultural family. I think it is a great representation of who I am and why it is okay to be mixed. I would read this as a self-introduction so that my student could learn something about myself and my background as it is an underrepresented group that they have most likely not read about or acknowledged before.

The Better Fort by Jessica Scott Kerrin

I chose this book due to the fact that no matter which child I am assigned, they will have a strong relation to the book topic which is about a treehouse. The Holly classroom at PCL spent the year working on their treehouse project which was finalized a few months ago. I am sure they are missing their extensive outside time so I believe it would be a great book for them to talk about what they are missing and use their prior knowledge to further their reading comprehension skills.

I chose this book because it brings a comedic and fun twist to the idea of being quiet or playing quietly. The Holly room kids are known for their excitement and loudness but I think this book would be a fun reminder that inside voices and quiet steps should still be considered. Especially since they are inside a lot more with their families.

I chose this book as another pattern option with a highly rhythmic flow. I have used this book in the past and incorporated movement with it as well to the beat of the words. It is always fun to read again and it is representative of the black community. It has a lot of rhyming which is a topic that he has a good foundation of but still needs to focus on the skill for a while.
I picked this book because in my experience of reading it over and over with the two year olds at PCL, it is highly entertaining. The rhyming follows a consistent beat throughout the book so its easy to pick up on and you can add different movements to the pattern.

I chose this book because it is a classic story with an empathetic message about not judging others by the way they look. This is an important lesson for all children to learn especially before entering kindergarten because being aware of how your words and choices effect others is critical.
I picked this book because self-esteem is an important topic and children should learn to build each other up instead of judging.
