Money/Economics
In 2nd grade we learn about Money/Economics. The students could have the opportunity to learn about producers/consumers, supply and demand and real world selling skills (making/counting change) by making a "Store". The students could be in partners or in groups and create an idea for a real life store and product they could sell. They could go through the motions of making advertisements, making the product and eventually getting to a point where they could sell their products at a booth. As a class or a grade level students would be able to sell their products to other students and have a sort of mall (ex. "Pepperhill Plaza") After the sale the students would be able to discuss supply and demand what sold the most and what didn't how prices effected these things and so on and so forth. Consistently reminding the students that these things are real world skills, this is an opportunity to bring in local store owners, bankers to discuss all the moving pieces that are involved in making a successful business, the research that goes behind selling products as well as the money aspect of it.

In second grade we study weather and weather tools used to measure weather. In my classroom I am planning on beginning a Project Based Learning activity in which the students will be creating their own rain gauge. They will be given items to choose from and they have to create their own rain gauge. This will also tie into STEM because students will have to use math and engineering in order to make the rain gauges. This would be real-world because we would put them outside of our classroom and collect data to determine rainfall in our area. We could also discuss the recent flooding in the areas near our school.

For the upcoming elections, students have been close reading different election texts such as Duck for President and Grace for President. Students go through the process of registering to vote, going into the booth, and completing the google form to vote. They have to write an opinion piece to support their vote. Now that students know the process, they applied to be president and they are running their own campaigns. They were chosen by a group of teachers and split into half to create the 2 parties. Students create iMovies, posters, slogans, logos, and party names for their groups. The students then have a 'debate' and present their ideas and speeches in front of their parents and other classmates. They will then vote on their classmates.
