A young lady Abby Wilson shot a bull elk by mistake near Springfield, MO. She was out hunting with her father and mistook the elk for a large white-tailed-deer. The authorities are still investigating her case to determine what her punishment will be. However the family has been receiving a lot of nasty messages from the public after her story went viral and they are suggesting that she should go to jail. 
I think that in this case the detterence to lock her up would not fit the crime as this was a mistake that could have been made many other young hunters in her position.
