Heroics and courage is shown throughout the book The Outsiders. One example of this theme is when Dally picks on Cherry for a while. Then Johnny comes up and stands up for Cherry against Dally. It would take lots f courage to go against Dally when you are super shy. Another example of courage in The Outsiders is when Johnny stabs Bob. This represents some courage because Johnny knew what was going to happen and he knew that they would have to run away because the cops would be after them. Probably the biggest and most recognizable example of heroics and courage in The Outsiders is when PB Johnny go into the burning church. The courage part of this event is when Pony and Johnny climb through the window into a flaming building which they know could collapse at any time. The part of this event that represents heroics is that PB and Johnny save the little kids from the burning building. They risked their lives to save little kids lives.

" Leave her alone, Dally. "Huh?" Dally was taken off guard. He stared at Johnny in disbelief. Johnny couldn't say boo to a goose. Johnny gulped and got a little pale, but he said, "You heard me. Leave her alone." Pg.24, this shows the theme because even though Johnny is super shy, he got enough courage to stand up for Cherry against Dally.

"You really killed him, huh, Johnny? Yeah. His voice quavered slightly, I had to. they were drowning you Pony, They might have killed you. and they had a blade...." Pg.57, this shows the theme because the Socs could have killed Pony. Johnny possibly saving Pony's life was heroic.

"We pushed open the door to the back room and found four or five little kids... He looked over his shoulder and saw that the door was blocked by flames, then pushed open the window and tossed out the nearest kid..." Pg.92. This quote was when Johnny, Ponyboy, and Dally were saving the children in a burning church On a runaway from a murder, it is heroic to save little children in fire. Also taking Johnny's life after injuries

"Hold up! A familiar voice yelled. "Hold it." Darry turned to see who it was, and Paul swung... The rumble was on. Dallas Winston ran to join us." Pg.143, this shows courage because after the burning church scene, Dallas Winston still came to the rumble to win it for Johnny. Even though Dally was hurt, he still wanted to participate in something for Johnny to prove that greasers are as tough as the socs.
