Reasons for choosing this source :  I chose this source because it describes the entertainment in early Singapore which helped to contribute to Singapore by letting people have a source of entertainment which was able to be improved in the future .

How this source is relevant to  HI question : This source is relevant to the HI question as it shows a Chinese Opera performance which served as a form of entertainment to the people of early Singapore. There were no televisions , computers , phone or the internet last time . Thus , early immigrants would take part in Chinese operas as their jobs . Without any other forms of entertainment back then , many people would watch this opera . Reasons for choosing this source : I chose this source as it shows us Tan Tock Seng Hospital in 1876 . This represents the contribution of early immigrant , Tan Tock Seng , to the healthcare in Singapore by funding the creation of a hospital which provides healthcare to the poor .

How this source is relevant to Hi question : This source is relevant to the HI question because health conditions in the 19th century were deplorable, with the poor and sick given little access to medical treatment. Tan Tock Seng , an immigrant of Fujian descent from Malacca who became a wealthy merchant in Singapore, offered to donate $5,000 to set up a hospital for the poor. He was responding to the governor's request for advice on how to legally compel the rich to contribute to the welfare of the less well-off.Tan Tock Seng Hospital was the first hospital in Singapore to be built totally from non-government funds . Training of early immigrants to become police officers would be crucial to our nation’s defence against attacks . Singapore is a small country and needed people to protect it . Since there were thousands of early immigrants flocking to Singapore , many could be recruited to become police officers. shows employed coolies carrying bags of goods filled with
objects to a ship . Many early immigrants became coolies. Coolies were essential to our economy as they did the tough work that locals didn't want to do .

How this source is relevant to the HI question : Coolies, who
were early immigrants who wanted to make a living, were
employed in mines, ports, plantations, construction sites and
as rickshaw pullers. They did back-breaking tasks under the
sun and for long hours, such as loading and unloading cargo
as well as tin-ore mining. Reasons for choosing this source : I chose this source because it shows Henry Nicholas Ridley who was a plant geographer and economic botanist. He helped to boost Singapore’s economy through his innovations in the rubber industry .

How this source is relevant to the HI question : Ridley  researched the commercial possibilities of rubber, including the various methods to tap the tree’s latex without causing permanent harm to the tree and preparing the latex for sale. In doing so , more countries became more interested in trading for rubber produced in Singapore which vastly improved our economy . Ridley’s research became essential in improving our economy through the trade of rubber .
