Introduction: The hypothesis emphasised that appearance exposure in social media (particularly appearance focused accounts, e.g., models) correlates positively with body image concerns in society, creating a thin- ideal internalisation.

Methods: Australian young women aged 18-29 were asked series of questions which they answered using a variety of scales and sub scales relating to body image and were also asked to complete activities relating to Facebook and Instagram.

Results:
Overall SNS use may be impractical and unnecessary in preventing body-image concerns in women. The findings indicate that appearance-focused SNS activities should be looked at rather than general SNS activity, in regards to Instagram and Facebook users. Therefore the focus should be on targeted interventions and practical suggestions for vulnerable young women.

Discussion:

Citable statement:

Introduction:
Cohen et al. wanted to investigate whether appearance exposure and viewing friends’ photos, along with following appearance-focused social media accounts, for example, health and fitness, had a stronger correlation to women’s body image concerns compared to broader measures, such as total time spent on SNS, and whether this differed between Facebook and Instagram use.

Methods:
Conducted a correlational survey design involving items in a questionnaire to assess whether certain SNS use on facebook and instagram was associated with body image concerns

Results:
Facebook appearance exposure but not total SNS use was positively correlated with thin ideal internalisation and body surveillance also Instagram results were compared with non Instagram users and no overall significant difference body image variables.

Discussion:

Citable statement:

Introduction:

There has previously been research into the effects of social media use on body image concerns, but they have been inadequate because they measured broad social media use and not appearance-specific content.

Methods:
A multi-factor survey analysis was used to find correlations between different aspects of SNS use and body image concerns among young adult women on the platforms of Instagram and Facebook.

Results:
results showed entire use of sns does not correlate in the risks factors mention (eating disorders, body dissatisfaction). However, activities involving photos sharing, photo idealisation) may contribute to a higher risk factor.

Discussion:
Overall SNS use doesn‘t correlate to body image concerns, but appearance-focused SNS use does, which indicates that to limit body image concerns among young women they should be advised to limit their appearance focused SNS use.

Citable statement:
