While there she earned Bachelor of Arts degree with a dual major in Political Science and economics. While there she pledged to the Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorrority, one of the "Divine Nine." She also was on the debate team and apart of student council.

After gaining her law degree Kamala began working as a deputy district attorney in Oakland,California. She gained a reputation as very tough prosecutor. She prosecuted cases involving drug trafficing, gang violence, and sexual abuse.

In 2012 Kamala delivered an address at the Democratic National Convention which raised her National profile. She became widely considered rising star in the party and was recruited to run for the U.S. Senate seat. In 2015 Kamala declared her candidacy and she easily won the seat in 2016. Kamla became the first Indian American and only the second Black woman to hold the Senate seat.

In 2019 Kamala announced she was seeking the Democratic Presidential nomination for the 2020 election. She was seen as one of the top contenders but he campaign began to go down hill as she was questions about past decisions she made as a prosecutor. She dropped out of the race in November 2019.

In August 2020 Joe Biden selected Kamala Harris as his vise presidential running mate in the 2020 election. In November 2020 Kamala became the first Black woman to be elected Vice President of the United States.
