In 1868 Edison became an single inventor in Boston. Moving to New York the next year, he undertook inventive work for major telegraph companies. Edison's career was taking off. With the money from those contracts, he established lots of manufacturing shops in Newark, New Jersey, where he employed experimental machinists to assist in his inventive work. He soon established a reputation as a first-rank inventor. His work included stock tickers, fire alarms, methods for sending messgaes on a wire, and a electronical telegraph to send messages by autmotaic machinery.
