Circe is novel set during the Greek heroic age and a blend of various myths from the perspective of the title character, who is a goddess and witch. Circe is a daughter of Helios, a titan god; she is banished by the Olympians for her use of sorcery. The novel has feminist and anti-establishment themes and explores her origin story and narrates Circe's encounters with mythological figures like Hermes, Greek monsters, Jason and Medea, and Odysseus. I love the use of source content from Greek myths as a concept and don't mind that I have all the spoilers thanks to my minor specialization in Classical Studies! I knew that would pay off some day :)

Toni Morrison is a writer whose work has deeply influenced me because of the way she tells Black stories with honesty, care, and power. Her writing centres black voices, especially black women, in a way that feels both personal and universal. When I read her work, I feel seen, challenged, and invited to reflect more deeply on history, identity, and healing.

Morrison's authorial voice is poetic, thoughtful, and emotional. She doesn't rush the reader. Instead, she allows the story to unfold slowly, using rich language and strong imagery. Her style often weaves together memory, history, and emotion which makes her writing feel layered and meaningful. Even when her stories address topics like trauma or loss, there is still a sense of strength.

She is best known for her book entitled Beloved.

As a future educator, her work encourages me to value storytelling, lived experiences and voice. Toni Morrison shows that writing can be a tool for truth, reflection and empowerment. This is why her work continues to have a lasting impact on me, from my first novel read in high school, until now.

Esi Edugyan’s novels have a unique way of confronting the tension between belonging and alienation. As a Canadian writer of Ghanaian descent, her exploration of the experiences of Blackness, both in the context of history and contemporary life, feels deeply personal yet universal. What resonates most with me is her exploration of individual journeys of self-definition, particularly when it comes to navigating one's identity in a world that often tries to define you for you.

Edugyan’s voice is elegant, thoughtful, and rich with nuance. Her writing tends to be poetic, with a controlled yet evocative style. She doesn’t shy away from the darker complexities of human experience, but she conveys them with a kind of restraint that allows readers to feel the weight of the moments without feeling overwhelmed by them. This is meaningful to me as i am also from Ghana and love to see black women speaking through meaningful writing!

I really connect with Robert Munsch because, just like him, I love telling my own stories and sharing real-life experiences through my writing. His books feel honest, personal, and full of heart, like he is sitting right beside you telling a story with dramatic flair and big energy. I love his authentic and animated voice because it makes every story come alive. You can almost hear the excitement, the emotion, and the humour in every sentence.

What I admire most is how creative, funny, and memorable his storytelling is. He is not afraid to be loud, silly, emotional, or over-the-top, and that is what makes his writing so powerful. His humour keeps readers hooked, while his real-life inspiration makes his stories feel meaningful and relatable. Reading his books reminds me that it is okay to be expressive, passionate, and a little dramatic when I write. Robert Munsch inspires me to trust my voice, tell my own story proudly, and believe that being myself is what makes my writing special.

I grew up watching her on Dance Moms, and reading her book gave me a deeper understanding of her experiences.

Naguib Mahfouz is one of the Egyptian writers who has had a significant impact on me. His writing appeals to me because it focuses on common people and illustrates how societal shifts impact their lives. He portrays locations and characters in a way that makes them seem real, and his voice is authentic and thorough. He primarily writes social realism, frequently focusing on Egyptian family life, customs, and hardships. He is particularly significant because he was the first Arab writer to receive the Nobel Prize in Literature. His art demonstrates the profound depth that can be found even in the most straightforward tales about everyday life.

Gregory Maguire is a queer writer that creates tales that typically bridge the realms of fantasy and realism. Taking characters that are well known in the public domain and expanding upon the bones of their stories. A Witch from a bubble under house arrest for her crimes against the state, A confession of the sweet stepsister of a Danish beauty. He brings these fairy tales into the stark cold of reality. One of the strongest points that stayed with me was a meeting that never happened, and when questioned he simply answered some people come into your life like a twister, and leave just as quick.

I have always loved the work of Langston Hughes because his poetry feels honest, powerful, and impactful. Reading “Dreams” as a teenager motivated me. The poem is simple, but its message is strong: hold on to your dreams, no matter what. Langston Hughes helped pave the way for other Black writers, and discovering his poetry opened the door for me to explore more Black authors, such as Maya Angelou, Toni Morrison and Zora Neale Hurston.

I was introduced to Julia Cook early in my career, and her book My Mouth is a Volcano hooked me instantly! Her stories align so beautifully with a kindergarten schedule, helping children make those lightbulb connections. Julia has a gift for grasping a child's mind, holding their attention with vivid adjectives and colourful illustrations that bring every word to life.

Beyond the bright pictures, Julia writes in a genre called bibliotherapy*. Her voice is whimsical and kind, turning tricky behaviours into fun metaphors—like a mouth "erupting" with lava or a "tattle tongue" turning purple and itchy. She is so notable because she gives kids (and teachers!) a shared language to navigate big feelings. Her books aren't just stories; they are essential tools that turn challenging classroom moments into meaningful, heart-centred lessons.

Something personal about me is a dream I have to write a children's book one day, and if I do, I always thought I would follow Julia's writing style!

*Bibliotherapy is basically "healing through books." It’s the art of using stories to help children navigate big feelings, social hurdles, and personal challenges. By seeing a character tackle a problem—like a "volcano mouth" or a "tattle tongue"—kids learn they aren't alone and gain a gentle, creative vocabulary to solve those same problems in their own lives. -AID Google Gemini 3

An author from the Urdu language popular for his literary impact is Ishtiaq Ahmed. He was the writer of a very famous detective series that I read during my childhood and into my teens. He is best known for detective fiction and young adult literature. His work influenced me because it introduced me to mystery, suspense and moral courage. He created stories that were thrilling and filled with ethical lessons. His voice was fast paced, clear and conversational. His style was simple, direct prose that kept me turning pages. He always had cliffhangers and I would wait for the next installment in the series. He was one of the few writers who wrote children’s literature in Urdu. It made reading his books exciting and culturally relevant. His writing influenced me because it showed how mystery can be enjoyable and formative and that literature does not have to be philosophical.

I have been a dedicated fan of the Harry Potter series since I was in Grade 7 and its influence on my perspective remains just as strong today. J.K. Rowling’s authorial voice is remarkably immersive, blending a sharp British wit with a deeply empathetic tone that makes her magical world feel grounded and real. Writing in the Contemporary Fantasy genre, her style is defined by intricate long-game plotting where she plants tiny seeds in early chapters that bloom into massive revelations books later. She is notable for sparking a global reading renaissance and for her ability to tackle heavy themes like prejudice, sacrifice, and the power of choice within a narrative that feels like home. Her work influenced me by teaching me that words are our most inexhaustible source of magic and that the stories we love as children can continue to shape who we are as adults. Even now as 35 I still love her and Harry Potter and its everywehre in our home including my salt and pepper shake hehe

One writer who has influenced me is Julia Quinn, the author of the Bridgerton series, her books look like light historical romance, but what really stood out to me was how strong and opinionated her female characters are. They are living in a time where their choices are limited, yet they still find ways to speak up, push back, and shape their own futures. Her writing style is so playful, but underneath that humor there is always something deeper about power, identity, and expectations placed on women. I love how her authorial voice makes the women feel real. They are not perfect. They question things. They want love, but they also want autonomy. That balance really resonated with me. As someone who has navigated different expectations in my own life, especially around culture, family, and identity, I connect to the idea of women trying to honor tradition while also wanting something more for themselves. Her work reminded me that wanting both strength and softness does not make you weak. It makes you human. What makes her notable to me is that she proves romance can still center female agency. The women are not just waiting to be chosen. They are choosing, thinking, and negotiating their place in the world. That perspective stayed with me long after I finished the books.

When I read The Housemaid, I honestly thought I had figured it out I until I realized I was completely wrong. That’s what makes her writing so engaging.

Her authorial voice is direct and suspenseful. She writes psychological thrillers, often from a first-person perspective, which makes the story feel personal and immediate. Her chapters are short and sharp, keeping the tension high the entire time.

What makes her stand out is how she builds suspense in everyday settings and slowly reveals something darker underneath. Her writing feels accessible but still clever, and that balance is what keeps me coming back to her books.

Salman Rushdie, specifically Haroun and the Sea of Stories left a profound impact on me. Writing a children’s story to his son while he was in hiding due to a fatwa placed on him for another book he authored, Rushdie weaves an absolutely compelling story that largely encourages discussion, playing devils advocate, etc. It mixed humor, humanity and profound introspection. Such a fantastic writing voice that as a 16 year old reading it, changed my worldview in a way only The Alchemist has ever come close to. Knowing this was a heartbreaking way to try and reach his young son adds a layer of genuine human interaction that makes this such a powerful and important book

More Than the King of Horror…Stephen King

An author who influenced me the most is Stephen King! I’ve loved his writing since I was 12, and he touches on a vast array of genres, but I love his horror books the most. Not only has he created some of the tropes we later see in media, but the amount of details he’ll add to a book can be truly insane once it all ties together. One of the first books I read by him was Needful Things and I had to make a chart to keep track of who was ‘pranking’ each other! While I haven’t read all his books, and have found faults with a few of them, he is a solid writer who creates amazing characters, world building, and twisted ideas. He can also write solid romance when needed! (11/22/63 being a great example!) My personal favourite of his is IT, including all the media and world building that has spawned from it since its release.

Her books are written in poetic form, which makes the emotions feel stronger and the story more intense.

One book that had a lasting impact on me is The Book of Negroes by Lawrence Hill. I first read this book in my early twenties when I was a nursing student. At the time, I was struggling because I wasn’t happy in the program and I felt uncertain about the direction my life was taking. A professor who had recently finished the novel suggested it to me and spoke very highly of it. Her enthusiasm sparked my curiosity. I had also been wanting to start reading casually again, so I decided this would be the perfect place to begin.

Hill’s authorial voice is powerful, reflective and deeply emotional. His writing blends historical research with storytelling in a way that feels vivid and personal. The novel follows Aminata Diallo, whose journey from childhood in Africa through enslavement and eventually toward freedom exposes readers to the human realities behind historical events. One part that stayed with me was Aminata’s resilience and determination to survive despite everything she endured. Her strength and courage made me reflect on the power of perseverance even when life feels uncertain.

Reading this book was an emotional experience. I felt sad, hopeful, anxious and even inspired at different moments. It truly felt like an emotional roller coaster. More importantly, it sparked a deep interest in historical narratives for me. As an immigrant, I realized there was so much history I had never learned about, articularly the lived experiences of enslaved people and the often overlooked history of Black Loyalists. After finishing this book, I began reading more autobiographies and historical accounts because I wanted to better understand the real stories behind history.

This novel is notable because it brings attention to historical experiences that are often overlooked. For me, it was more than just a story. It was the book that reignited my love of reading and opened the door to learning about history through personal narratives.

Looking back now, I realize that this book did more than tell a powerful story. It helped me rediscover my love of reading and opened my curiosity about history and the voices behind it.

While these books were easy reads, and very short, I found them a refreshing palette cleanser between my more expansive chapter books. I have always loved a good story, especially ones where I could immerse myself and imagine I am apart of the cast. The Bailey School Kids books really hit that mark for me. The children's imaginations and fears shaped the way they seen the world around them. They were always convinced that ordinary adults in their community were actually monsters or mythical creatures. The author shows us how quickly assumptions can form when something seems unfamiliar or unusual, and what might appear to be frightening might just be a misunderstanding or a product of imagination.

One writer that has heavily influenced me is Mitch Albom. Mitch Albom is a writer and journalist. He is known for his most famous book called, Tuesdays with Morrie. This book is about Mitch Albom reconnecting with his college professor. His college professor known as, Morrie had been struggling from a catastrophic disease called amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ASL). Morrie is like no other. Instead of Morrie dwelling on his sickness and fearing death he rather takes a positive approach and chooses to spend what time he has left coming with his mortality. Each Tuesday Morrie and Mitch talk about the meaning of life, death, relationships, and love. Each conversation on Tuesday holds a significant and heartfelt meaning which has taught me on what life has to bring. Mitch's personal authorial voice, style, and genre of writing makes readers feel heard and safe because of the use of persuasive techniques such as call to action and use of imagery. Lastly, as someone who struggles with overthinking and personal tragic life experiences Mitch Albom books such as Tuesdays with Morrie left me feeling with a sense of hope, peace, and meaning. Mitch Albom references that once you learn how to die, you learn how to live. Rather than focusing on fearing death, his books teach that accepting death helps humans live with a sense of meaning and hope.

Lemony Snicket's " A Series of Unfortunate Events" was my first memorable dive into mystery and dark humor. I believe this was the beginning of a love for fictional mystery and murder mystery type writing series. His writing served as an example of a strong authentic voice, not just plot being able to deeply engage readers. His writing also emphasized that not all children's literature needed a "happily ever after".

One writer who has significantly influenced me is Robert Munsch. I grew up reading his books, and now I love reading them to both my own children and my students. Seeing their reactions, laughing, joining in, and predicting what will happen next has shown me how powerful engaging storytelling can be in developing a love of reading.

Robert Munsch’s authorial voice is energetic, humorous, and very child-centred. His writing style uses repetition, expressive language, and exaggerated storytelling, which makes his books perfect for interactive read-alouds. Children naturally want to participate, which helps build confidence and early literacy skills.

He writes in the genre of children’s literature, but his stories often carry meaningful messages. Books like Love You Forever and The Paper Bag Princess explore themes such as independence, resilience, and identity in ways that are easy for children to understand.

What makes Robert Munsch especially notable is his ability to truly connect with children. His stories reflect their experiences, emotions, and imagination. As an aspiring teacher, I find his work inspiring because it shows how literacy can be both meaningful and fun, while still supporting important foundational skills.

Jane Austen has always been one of my favourite authors. I first read her work in a women's literature class in high school and it started my love of historical romance. Austen's books show a wide range of character development and story line which are both historically accurate and believable. Her portrayal of her female characters as strong are also another reason I love her books so much. Regardless of whether they are quiet, kind-hearted and reserved like Jane or spirited and determined like Elizabeth her characters express real emotions throughout their stories to bring readers in and engage them with her plots. She can truly make you feel like you are present in the same time and place as her characters. I can also appreciate the struggles she went through as a woman author in the late 1700's-early 1800's to be recognized and respected. It was her that led me to read other historical romance novels by such great authors like Charlotte Bronte (Jane Eyre), her sister Emily Bronte (Wuthering Heights), Louisa May Alcott (Little Women) and even Julia Quinn (The Bridgerton Series)!

I loved so many books when I was younger, but Dragon Rider by Cornelia Funke is the most memorable. I remember having the physical copy and loving the front cover. Growing up with an interest in fiction, fantasy, and sci-fi, I adored anything with mythical creatures. I also remember this book being the biggest novel I had ever seen, with over 500 pages. Reading them all was a personal goal of mine, and I am so glad I did. The story, plot, characters, and settings were well-developed with intricate details. The author was very descriptive, and I remember imagining every scene as if I were there in the story.

A few years later, I came across Inkheart, which was also written by Cornelia. I had the same experience of imagining every character, setting, and scene in fine detail. I was able to put myself in that world, empathize with the characters, and understand the struggles they went through. The main character was also about my age, so I wondered what life would be like if I switched places with her. I honestly think the author did an excellent job in reaching her audience of young readers, as the Inkheart series became so special to me. It felt like a hidden gem I discovered. While most kids my age were reading the Rainbow Magic series, I was busy keeping these stories to myself.

Cornelia inspired me to develop descriptive writing skills. This supports engagement and provides an immersive experience through words. With great storytelling, readers are left imagining fictional concepts and investing their emotions, which leaves a powerful impact on their reading experience.

One writer who has significantly influenced me is Gabriel García Márquez, the author of One Hundred Years of Solitude. His work stands out because of its unique blend of reality and imagination, known as magical realism.

Márquez’s authorial voice is rich, descriptive, and deeply immersive. His style weaves together everyday life with extraordinary, almost surreal events, making the impossible feel natural. He often writes in a way that reflects history, culture, and human experience, especially within Latin American contexts.

What makes him particularly notable is his ability to transform ordinary moments into profound, symbolic experiences. His storytelling influenced me by showing how creativity and imagination can deepen meaning and emotion in writing.

One writer whom I genuinely enjoy reading is Colleen Hoover. Her writing is smooth and easy to follow. Her writing style is also descriptive, and while reading it almost makes you feel like you were in the story. One of her books that I read was Verity, and it gave me all the feels. Verity is a book that has different components of sadness, happiness, romance, and thriller. Highly recommend.
