Due to the Columbian Exchange and the discovery of the New World, many slaves were removed from their homes in Africa and forced to work in colonies and settlements in the Americas. At first in the New World, Native Americans were used as slaves and there was a system of indentured servants who would do labor for a certain amount of years to pay off their debts. However, the Amerindians were less effective than the African slave and many of them died due to European diseases. Slave trade began in 1518 when the Portuguese brought slaves from Africa over to the New World. These slaves would be forced to do hard labor and farm crops and work for Euopean settlers for no pay.

There were many Native American tribes in North and South America. In South America, the most well known tribes were the Mayans, Aztecs and the Incas. All three were eventually wiped out by the Spanish due to diseases and military conquest led by conquistadors.
The Southwestern Tribes of North America lived in clay houses and specialized in growing corn. The Indians in the Midwest were very nomadic, and acquired their food through hunting-gathering techniques. They also lived in tipis as temporary shelters. The Indians that lived in the Northwest part of the country were skilled at fishing and lived in longhouses.
Many Indian tribes would form large alliances or confederacies, like the Iroquois Confederacy, for protection against other Indian tribes or European settlers.
