Steve Jobs

The CEO that changed my personal life the most is without a doubt: Steve Jobs. His vision on technology about making it accessible for everyone by packing it into a nice looking device, and making it extremely easy to use is eye-opening. His eye for detail and his focus is what made Apple the biggest company by revenue in the technology sector (Fortune, 2017).

Although Jobs didn’t have an easy childhood, being adopted and a school dropout, he managed to steal the hearts of many. But even though most people know him as the successful CEO of Apple, he made some career switches to other big companies after he got fired at his own company. Being co-founder and CEO of Disney’s Pixar, and NeXT he’s got quite the résumé. To illustrate his influence, he is widely considered to be the pioneer of the modern computer industry. Before Jobs created his first computer, computers were only meant for computer “nerds” who could navigate themselves through lines of code, without a mouse or any other pointing device. Fun fact: Jobs named his first computer after his daughter, the Apple Lisa, which shortly after changed it’s name to Macintosh. His most recent breakthrough innovation in the tech industry is without a doubt the iPhone. Innovation after innovation didn’t only change Apple, it changed numerous industries: computer, music, phone and tablet.

"Apple". Fortune.
Jeffrey Bezos

Although I am not currently using any Amazon products or services, I do found this company rather interesting. The way that Amazon made the e-commerce grow exponentially under Bezos’ guidance is fascinating.

After working for a lot of companies, Bezos decided to pursue his dream by developing his ideas for e-commerce. While, at first, Amazon limited itself to sell ebooks on it’s platform, they now sell almost anything on their platform. The one thing that gets to me the most, is the way how Amazon lowered the threshold for making an online purchase by introducing the Amazon Alexa, with which you can buy almost anything with just your voice. And it’s a major succes. Because Bezos initiated the smart home speaker market, he changed the lives of many Americans by making life easier with completing tasks with your voice in a natural, humanly way, like making an online purchase in no-time.

While Amazon’s main goals with it’s Alexa is to suck people into their ecosystem by making people listen to Amazon Prime Music or purchasing from the Amazon store, people also buy their smart speaker for controlling their smart home, setting timers in the kitchen or call people. Together with other successes such as the Amazon Kindle, for reading ebooks, I simply cannot deny Bazos’ success and his impact on people’s daily lives around the world.

Elon Musk

Elon Musk is most known for his ambitious dreams. I’ve heard people say that it’s better to set goals that are maybe too far away, then not being ambitious at all, and Musk is a living example of that.

He managed his way to the top on a very risky but admirable way. He has founded numerous successful companies throughout his lifetime, selling them at the right moment after which he used that money to start his next one. The first most noteworthy company that he started is X.Com. He invested 10 million dollars into this online payment platform. After a year, it was merged with Confinity, which also had an online payment platform: PayPal. In 2002, PayPal was sold to Ebay for 1.5 billion dollars of which Musk got 165 million. Because Musk wouldn’t be Musk if he had retired after this great deal, he moved over into his next dream and company: SpaceX and colonizing Mars.

If this doesn’t sound time-consuming enough, he also interfered with the already existing car company Tesla Motors in 2003. After the financial crisis in 2008, Musk felt obligated to take matters in his own hands and took the leadership of Tesla.

Of all four CEO’s in this padlet, I find Musk to be the most ambitious one.

Reed Hastings

Reed Hastings is the co-founder of Netflix, which is widely considered to be the best video streaming service out there (M. Honorof, 2018). Together with his team, Hastings managed to make the concept of paying monthly to watch series and movies legally mainstream. It all started back in 1997 when Hastings, together with his companion Mark Randolph, founded Netflix. Hastings got the idea when he unintentionally handed in a movie too late that he rented (G. Keating, 2012). Netflix’s initial business model was based on renting out DVD’s that were being sent by post. Once the customer had sent their DVD back to Netflix, they, on their turn, sent the next DVD that was on their list. The maximum amount of DVD’s that a customer could have depended on their subscription. With the increasing bandwidth of the internet, Netflix moved over to an online streaming service.

Until 2010, Netflix was limited to the United States, whereafter they fired up their servers in Canada which made it an international company. One year later they added Latin-America to their list of countries and after another 2 years they started to dominate in Europe.

The fact that Hastings managed to make Netflix a phenomenon all over the world is enough evidence for me to give it a place amongst the others in this Padlet.

G.
