If your child is learning English, their school can give them extra time to finish important tests like the NYS ELA, math, science, social studies, and Regents exams. The principal and your child’s teacher will work together to decide how much extra time would help, such as giving them half the regular time in addition to the regular test time. This support is meant to help your child show what they really know without being rushed because of language barriers.

English Language Learners are allowed to use bilingual glossaries during New York State tests in all subjects except foreign languages. These glossaries can only give a direct word-for-word translation, they cannot explain or define the words for the student. There are NYS approved bilingual dictionaries and glossaries that can be downloaded to be used not only during the year but also during the assessments. They are available for math, science, and social studies to help support students during testing.

New York State offers exams translated into a variety of languages that a student learning English can utilize both the English version and a written translated version of the test at the same time. They will only record their answers in one language. There are no written translations for for the ELA exams.

If there is no translated version of a state exam available in a particular language, schools can offer ELL students an oral translation of the test.

Students may use their home language in the writing portions exams, except for the ELA exams.

The NYSESLAT is an assessment that measures language proficiency, therefore there are no accommodations given for this exam. If the student has an IEP or 504 Plan that includes an accommodations for an exam to be read to them (either by a human or a with the use of technology) then this will carry through for the NYSESLAT as well. The writing portion, however, will only be read with no other assistance given.
