Special features of these plants enable them to retain moisture for long periods of time. For example, some drought resistant plants have light-reflecting hairs of the surface of their leaves to reduce evaporation, and waxy stems and leaves to help them retain moisture. These plants may also have slower growth rates, little foliage, and root systems that extend far below the surface to facilitate access to water.
