It shows the wanting to know what he is going to say and how he is going to tell a joke.

1. Bill and Sam brought the kid back and seemed scared of the father.

2. It shows that the story will have a surprising end as shown when the kid wasn't scared but instead the kidnappers were.

3. There was irony since we expected the kid and father to be scared and upset but instead it was the kidnappers who were terrified.
