Both "A Narrow Fellow in the Grass" by Emily Dickinson and "The Black Snake" by Mary Oliver describe the snake as a whip but in different ways. In Oliver's poem she describes it as a "braided whip" (3). While in Dickinson's she thought of the snake as a "Whip Lash" (4). Mary Oliver's description gives the snake a peaceful almost gentle presence which shows that the person in the story wasn't afraid of the snake but rather had compassion for it. Unlike the dynamic in the first poem Dickinson's poem shows fear in the way she described the snake as a motion that is very abrupt rather than what it looked like.
