Stage 6: Intimacy vs Isolation

Stage 7: Generativity vs Stagnation

Trust

This stage was resolved quickly because I was born to experienced, loving parents. To the extent of my knowledge, my parents were attentive physically and emotionally at this time. I had all of my needs taken care of, forming my sense of basic trust.

Autonomy

Throughout my early childhood I was always encouraged to try new things as long as they were safe. I was not allowed to claim to dislike a food before trying it. I was also the third born child, so my parents were not overly concerned with my physical safety, as some first-time parents can be.

Initiative

During this stage, my little sister was born. This helped me develop initiative due to the decreased assistance in every-day tasks.

Inferiority

This stage in my life resolved in inferiority. Likely because I was bullied and excluded by my older brothers, I viewed myself as far inferior to my peers. This led to me being insecure and quiet in school. I found this to be the resolution by the time I reached puberty, but I have done lots of work on this topic since and have seen major improvement.

Identity

At the beginning of this stage, I was experiencing identity confusion. This presented as being overly agreeable, non confrontational, and only acting based upon what will please others. This issue did not resolve until the end of this stage when I reached young adulthood. I have now solidified the space I allow myself to take up, I hold strong morals and beliefs, and I have confidence in confrontation.

Intimacy

When entering young adulthood I experienced struggles with isolation after most of my friends moved away for college. I have found intimacy in close bonds with my family. I have a loving and openly affectionate relationship with my family, and I am especially close with my mother and sister.

Generativity

Stagnation can be a struggle for me, sometimes I feel I have nothing important to do; and the things I do need to do are unimportant to me. I have worked to resolve this crisis by actively focusing on how I impact others and using that to the other person’s advantage. I always try to have interactions in which I leave the person feeling better than they did before, even if it’s just slight.

Integrity

I hope this crisis resolves to integrity. I have faith that I will later be proud of the way I have lived, as long as I always exist with love. Despair will not be a problem for me as long as I remember all of the joy I have experienced.
