Hello! My name is Mary Sztukowski and this is my Padlet. In this Padlet you can find multiple resources that can be used to incorporate literacy in the three content areas of Math, Science, and Social Studies.

Each Content Area consists of three "Big Ideas" found in the DESE Standards. Within each big idea you will find a non-fiction book, an online resource, and an additional print resource.

Incorporating reading and writing in all content areas is important for the growth and development of students of all ages. Therefore, all the resources selected to incorporate content area literacy in Math have been collected with Second Grade students in mind. The resources in Science have been collected for Third Grade students. Finally, the resources in Social Studies have been collected for Fourth Grade students.

The last two tabs of my live binder contain my evaluations and citations for each resource!

                 Please enjoy.

Prodigy is a Math platform that engages, motivates, and differentiates. The site has students creating their own avatar and working towards math skills in a game style fashion. All skills are aligned with Common Core Standards and teachers have the ability to see reports on student progress towards each goal. Prodigy would be a great tool to teach second graders about Relationships and Algebraic Thinking especially in regards to developing the concept of odd and even numbers. When looking at the math skills offered in Prodigy there is an option for Second Graders to work on odd and even number selection up to 20 and determining if numbers are odd or even in a word problem!

Having charts for students to reference is a great tool especially when trying to teach a new concept and reinforce the patterns seen in even and odd numbers! Therefore, I would use 100 charts to let students discover the relationship between even numbers independently. I would have them highlight all the even numbers in the chart in one color. We then would move into the odd numbers, highlighting with a different color. Therefore, students are active in the process of seeing that all numbers that end in 0,2,4,6,8 are even and numbers ending in 1,3,5,7,9 are odd! The students could then keep their charts as a tool to reference while we continue to learn and grow in our understanding and I would hang the charts on the wall as a reference for the whole class!

The book also expands into teaching about addition and subtraction of coins! Finally, the book concludes with teaching about the different ways to add coins to make the same amounts. My favorite part of the book is the realistic images of each coin. Therefore, the illustrations enhance the message of the story and give a visual representation to all the differences and values of each coin. Because this book teaches about the value, adding, subtracting, and different ways to make the same amount, I could see myself using this book in multiple different lessons, selecting certain sections of the book each time, depending on what we are learning in the classroom that day.

The Coin Poem resource is a great way to add an additional print in the form of a fun rhyme to enhance learning about money for Second Grade students! By teaching students a poem, a teacher is providing students with a more memorable way to learn each coin and their value. A great way to reinforce the concept even more would be to have student chant or sing the poem while adding in motions! By using this resource and adding in movement, teachers are encouraging students to read, listen, move, and practice their fluency all while learning essential facts about coins!

The book starts off by counting from one all the way to one hundred with a picture representing each number along the way. The book then continues to explain that there are many ways to get to 100 such as counting by twos, fours, fives, tens, twenty, and twenty-fives. The book also talks about adding and subtracting to get to 100! All of these ways to get to 100 are represented with pictures. The pictures are all images students are comfortable with such as apples, butterflies, or hamburgers. I love all the color and all the different ways this books teaches to get to 100. I could definitely use this book in multiple lessons and I think their are multiple pages in this book that would be great to give Second Graders a visual of counting in base ten!

In this way, Khan Academy allows for learners from K-12 to learn at their own pace and practice their skills in many different content areas.

Base Ten Pictures is a great resource that allows students to be creative but still reinforces their base ten skills that they are working on! In this activity students are given a list of directions to read and follow to create a picture using base ten manipulates. They then have to record the value of the hundreds, tens, and ones used and then find the total. They are then asked to continue and make another picture and find the difference in totals between the two. When first learning about base ten a teacher could eliminate the last steps in the activity and then give them the task of subtracting later. Therefore, this activity can be broken down and used throughout many lessons to reinforce the base ten skills being learned at the time. The flexibility of editing the steps also allows a teacher to differentiate per student needs!

Otto
Illustrator: Megan Lloyd
Year Published: 1996
Publishing Company and City: HarperCollins Publisher Inc, New York City

What Color is Camouflage? By Megan Lloyd is a great book that teaches the basic survival skills of multiple different animals all around the world. One of the survival skills is having camouflage! The book then continues to explain many different animals and their camouflage and how it helps them hide from their prey. The book defines camouflage and all the different forms it comes in and how it is helpful. This book is full of content specific vocabulary words and definitions. Therefore, I would use this book as a read aloud to introduce the idea of how certain inherited traits, such as camouflage, help animals survive. By utilizing this book as a read aloud I would ensure that students are comprehending all the new ideas and words that are in this story and as a way to ensure that my students see how different animals have different traits.

This book defines weather, discusses the sun, explains different types of clouds, explores how the changes in temperature will cause snow, showcases the difference between thunder and lightening, discusses the colors of the rainbows, talks about when weather can be 'wild,' and finishes with defining wind. The book also goes into great detail about the events, battles, discussions, and the governmental decisions during this time period. This book is a great tool to use in multiple different lessons. I personally used this book and only picked the pages that really showcased the differences between King George III and George Washington which was the focus of my lesson. The game that I have linked below is called, "For Crown or Colony?" In this game students will play the role of Nat Wheeler, a 14-year-old printer's apprentice in 1770 who lives in Boston. As the students navigate the city and complete the tasks, they will encounter a spectrum of people living and working there. Suddenly, tension begins to rise in the game, right before the Boston Massacre. Ultimately, the student will determine Nat's fate by deciding where his loyalties lie. Therefore, this site and this game is a fun way to reinforce and teach students the attitudes that brought on the American Revolution during this time period of study!

During the American Revolution there were many women that took on the roles of cooking, making clothes, and caring for the injured soldiers. Molly did all of these and and more. She would run onto the battle field in order to bring the soldiers water and when her husband was shot she even participated in the fight by shooting cannons at the enemy! The book explains all the ways that Molly went above and beyond to contribute to the American Revolution and that her bravery was even recognized by George Washington. Therefore, this book gives life and recognition to the contributions of women, especially Molly Pitcher, and would be a great book to read aloud to students, when studying about historical women prior to the 1800s as well as when learning about the American Revolution.
