Guevara also was a major force in improving literacy in Cuba. At the start of his literacy campaign, the literacy rate in Cuba was between 60 and 75%. He determined that the lack of educational facilities was the main reason for the depressed literacy rate. In order to increase literacy, Guevara asked the Cuban governments to build schools and focus on teaching the peasant class how to read and write. This extensive literacy program worked wonders and resulted in a jump in Cuba’s literacy rate to 96%.

The thing that inspires me most about Che, is why he fought against the Bastia. He had driven through multiple parts of Argentina, because he believed that southern american countries didn't get a long so well. After traveling, he discovered that there were many places in poverty and living in slums. This travel vastly changed his view on; politics, Himself and the world around him.

After returning back, and completing his degree in medicine, he again set off to Cuba, were he would join the revolution and become a leader.

The fact that he spent most of his time, studying and helping less fortunate people in rural areas inspires me a lot. I didn't really know much about Che until I spent more time researching him, but now that I know what he's done, it has helped me realise that us, more fortunate people, need to help others who are not.

“He taught me to think - he taught me the most beautiful thing which is to be human"~ Urbano - Former Cuban rebel fighter

Ernesto Guevara de la Serna, known as Che Guevara, was born on 14 June 1928 in Rosario, Argentina into a middle-class family. He studied medicine at Buenos Aires University and during this time travelled widely in South and Central America. The widespread poverty and oppression he witnessed, fused with his interest in Marxism, convinced him that the only solution to South and Central America's problems was armed revolution.

In 1954 he went to Mexico and the following year he met Cuban revolutionary leader Fidel Castro. Guevara joined Castro's '26th July Movement' and played a key role in the eventual success of its guerrilla war against Cuban dictator Fulgencio Batista.

Castro overthrew Batista in 1959 and took power in Cuba. From 1959-1961, Guevara was president of the National Bank of Cuba, and then minister of industry. In this position, he travelled the world as an ambassador for Cuba. At home, he carried out plans for land redistribution and the nationalisation of industry.
