When creating artwork, Australian Aboriginal artists tend to avoid super detailed work. Instead, they focus on the story they are telling. Therefore, they use symbols to get their intended story across. To Indigenous Australians, these symbols represent their landscape, people, and animals.

The use of dots is said to have started in the 1970s. The purpose of Aboriginal paintings is to tell stories and history through symbols. Indigenous Australians used dots as a way to protect their symbols from getting into the wrong hands (or outsiders). The idea behind the dots is that the symbols become more camouflaged within the painting and only community members could interpret the work.
