Was a newspaper reporter, social reformer, and photographer who took photos of the urban slums and tenements to educate the people of New York about poverty. He was an immigrant who lived in Denmark until he was 21. He had various jobs where he saw firsthand the "ragged underside" of city life. He became a police reporter and was assigned to the lower east part of New York where he found that the death rate for infants was 1 in 10. He used his pictures to exaggerate how important it is that less fortunate people had homes and opportunities. He spread his knowledge not only through photos but also through lectures and books.

Another reformer was named Jane Addams. She helped people in a neighborhood of immigrants.
