Studying while listening to music had to come from somewhere. Now, in my previous point, the clip we watched was playing classical music. Researchers have been using that style of music to do research on this matter since the 'Mozart Effect'. (next slide)
---Mozart Effect- the popular idea that listening to Mozart will make you smarter. - spacial reasoning
---JS Jenkins in the "The Journal of the Royal society of Medicine" wrote and article on the Mozart Effect where he mentions that during a PET scanning the parts of the brain connected with mental imaging which are effected when music was being played where the prefrontal, temporal, and precuneus regions are located overlap with those involved with music processing.
---We know what our brain needs to focus so obviously this theory of listening to classical music while studying was a valid one. Research shows that listening to music that is constant in state and has a steady repetitive pulse is best while studying.
---Some people can study with music and some people just can't
- When you listen to music that contains lyrics you are activating the language-processing areas of the brain. So while you think you're solely focused on your homework you're brain is also processing and thinking about the words in the song.

When I plan my homework for the week i tend to just jot everything in my planner where everything is more organized and I have a general view of what my week will look like. Well our brains do something very similar to that.
---When we do a specific task most of us just feel that doing the task itself is enough to focus. But, studies show that music helps with concentrating more then we think.
Mitzi Baker wrote a study called "Music moves brain to pay attention", a Stanford study that basically says music engages the parts of our brains involved with paying attention, making predictions and updating events in our memory
(Play PowerPoint)
---As you can see the different lobes in our Cerebrum, which is the largest part of our brain, light up when we await for what's to come next when listening to music.
---Event segmentation- when our brain is trying to make sense of the flow of information that the real world generates.
---In this fMRI the researchers concluded that the changes seen reflect the brains evolving responses to different phases of a symphony.
- Talk about the event changes and movements in each network.
---Our brain chooses what it wants to hear and sometimes listening to music is so relaxing that it playing in the background doesn't effect many but more often then not it does have a play in how we take in information while studying.

Being a student here at Valencia like the rest of you I know that there is always homework to be done or a good quick reading for a class to get through. I know when I'm doing either of those things I definitely feel like music puts me in the zone and helps me concentrate. As a matter of fact, as i was doing my outline and research for this speech I listened to music the whole way through. It's almost therapeutic you could say. But there's a reason most of us feel this way.
