I really like the idea of completing a story that the teacher begins. I think this allows for both creative writing and an opportunity for students to express their ideas without the stigma of "oh this is not right." Teachers can create a lesson, allow students to contribute and then see if students fully mastered the lesson by incorporating a Because, But, So within notebook.

I appreciated the scaffolding suggestions we shared to teach because, but, so... These ideas can help us to plan appropriately for different grade levels. Directly teaching the meaning of each word can only enhance our students thinking.

Using "because, but, so" daily will get them accustomed to saying more and elongating their sentence in a meaningful way.

The Hochman method is a great way to engage reluctant writers because it gives them a structure to turn to and then they can focus solely on their ideas and not how to express them. I think really giving the students topics that they care about to write about, thereby (for one thing at least) making the process natural and meeting them where they are as writers is the way to engage our students in writing and taking pleasure in their own process as writers.
