Seed treatment is a chemical, typically antimicrobial or fungicidal, with which are treated prior to planting to protect against soil-borne risks to the plant. These coatings can provide supplemental chemicals and nutrients designed to encourage growth. Seed treatment can be more environmentally friendly way of using pesticides as the amount of used can be very small.
