Short stories are normally a brief story that focuses on

one character or an event.

It is normally written in narrative prose, which is

basically written words structured the same as spoken words

- Gives idea of what it is about

-Shows what genre it is

-Draws the audience in and grabs&holds their attentilon

-Show who the hero & villain is

Vladimir Propp established a character theory, by analysing over 100 Russian fairytales, which indicates that there are 7 broad character types. He proposed that it was possible to classify characters and their actions into defined roles and functions.

1. The hero or victim/seeker hero - reacts to the donor, weds the princess.

2. The villain - struggles against the hero.

3. The dispatcher - character who makes the lack known and sends the hero off.

4. The (magical) helper - helps the hero in their quest.

5. The princess or prize and her father - the hero deserves her throughout the story but is unable to marry her because of an unfair evil, usually because of the villain. The hero's journey is often ended when. he marries the princess, thereby beating the villain.

6. The donor - prepares the hero or gives the hero some magical object.

7. The false hero - takes credit for the hero's actiona or tries to marry the princess.
