The setting is important because the slave's rebel at one point in the book: Meaning they will know their way around because the empire was their home before. In the book, it show’s how the slaves(the old people of the Herrania) adapted to the Valorian(the empire that conquered Herrani)With this sentence “This is someone who had learned how to please his Valorian conqueror.”  Also if the Valorians never took over the Harranians there would be no real conflict.

She is the daughter of the most famous and victorious General in Valorian history. The protagonist is very high in society because her father is a general. I believe that the charter is very smart kind and humble but, she can also be a bit manipulative. In one part of the book a free slave was selling jewelry and her best friend loved a pair of earrings. She was telling the girls that the earrings were topaz and was selling them for a large price. Kestrel realized that the earrings were glass dyed green. She automatically called the lady out. But in Valorian law, a slave that lied to a valorian that is high in society is punished by death. A soldier started to walk over and then Kestrel said “Ah. It seems I was mistaken. Indeed they are topaz.”. The reason she did that is so the lady wouldn’t die but also she would see her mistake. The protagonist then bought the earrings for her friend and left. In the eyes of the reader, we find her as smart and humble.

He is the one that makes Arin go undercover and spy on Kestrel and her father the General. He is also one of Arin’s close friend’s. Page one hundred shows you how Cheat wanted information on not just the General but Kestrel “What about the girl”Cheat said Arin wished he had asked him another question. Arin hesitated then said, “Reports of Lady Kestrel's military skill are exaggerated. “She won’t be a problem.    
The reason the Antagonist is a part of the conflict is that he is the leader of the Harranian rebellion. The conflict in The Winner’s Curse is when Harrians rebel and take their empire back; The Rebels kills all the villagers and poison everyone high in society. Kestrel is the only Valorian left in the city. She is now held as Arin’s prisoner. Also, no other Valions know how the rebellion took over the city. Cheat makes Kestrel send letters to her father the General that is in the capital of the Valorian empire with the whole Valorian army; The reason he is doing this is so Kestrel father doesn’t expect anything until the first battle.

The reason I believe this is the theme of the book is because of the end. At the end, Kestrel has to make a choice between letting the Herrians have their freedom but has to marry the emperor's son or have the Herrians be killed by the Valorian army and she can marry anyone. She choose to marry the emperor’s son and let the Herrians have their freedom. The reason she did this is because she loved Arin the new leader of the rebellion. If she didn’t marry the emperor’s son the army and especially her father would kill Arin the love of her life. The protagonist didn’t tell Arin the reason why she was engaged to the emperor’s son because she knew he would fight for her because they love each other.

It was filled with romance, action, and suspense. The character development could’ve been better. The author didn’t really tell the readers what the protagonist looked like only on page one hundred she told us she had pale skin and amber brown hair. You really had to think about the character and put some pieces together. The story was actually believable which was a nice. I didn’t like the ending at all; The book ended on a cliffhanger which was very aggravating. It was 357 pages so I expected the book to have an ending. It turns out that my book is series with books that are also 357 pages. So I was very upset with the ending. Other than that the book was filled with unexpected events I felt like I was watching a movie.I was always on the edge of my seat. It is a very good read and I would totally recommend the book.

After he killed the leader of the rebellion Cheat. He stepped up and became a the ruler. Arin was actually a good leader; No one opposed of him being the leader. “She had been right. The Herrani quickly took Arin as their leader, either because they had admired him or because they had liked Cheat’s falur for savagery and assumed that if Arin had killed him he must have been the better monster.”.
