- Strong-willed: Although this decision causes a divide between Khalil's own values & beliefs, as well the people around him & care for him, Khalil choses to sell drugs to help his mother.

- Determined: His need to keep himself and his family taken care of shows determination. To sell drugs for King, he would not only be taking care of his mother, who he always wanted to look out for and save, but also take care of his grandmother and brother while they deal with his grandmother's cancer treatment.

- Caring/Family-oriented: He cares deeply for the people in his corner. He sees himself as the man of the family and the only reliable source of income due to his grandmother being fired from the hospital and his mother being overtaken by drug addiction.

-Down-to-Earth/ Insightful: Khalil is very aware of his situation, as well as the situation of those around him that live in Garden Heights. (I.E. The Drug Trade, The local gangs, the citizens living in poverty, the youth of Garden Heights not having the resources to get a proper education in their local high school or college, most citizens can't get out of Garden Heights entirely or break their cycles.

- Funny: Khalil was able to make Starr feel comfortable and make her laugh at Big Dee's Spring Break Party.

- Khalil is forthright and outspoken about the issues facing his life at home and what eventually happens to him during the taillight stop by 115.

- Comments on the injustices life deals him while looking for solution and checking on those around him.

- Khalil didn't have the same support system or family dynamic at home as Starr. Khalil didn't have a mother and father to discuss things with at home (I.E. Lisa's sex education talk and Maverick's talk on police etiquette/ teaching of the Black Panther 10-point program). So therefore, Khalil didn't know that making the wrong moves or saying the wrong things around a police officer during a stop would put him in danger.

- His death was what set the story in motion.

- Starts the motif of Tupac Shakur's lessons being passed down through generations. (I.E. "The Hate U Give Little Infants F**** Everybody" being said first by Khalil and then again by Maverick & Starr later in the novel).

-We see through Starr's narration that Khalil was a young, intelligent 16-year-old that had to grow up fast because the lack of support from the adults in his life.

- We are told of instances of Khalil waiting up for his mother while she was walking

- Late and legendary Hip Hop artist, Actor, and Poet, Tupac Shakur. (Khalil admires Tupac and his music). Thomas includes the admiration of Tupac and his ideologies by Khalil to show the reader that Khalil is more insightful and knowledgeable to the way life goes at such a young age.

- Harry Potter. The Harry Potter books were loved by Starr, Khalil, and Natasha as children. The three of them would run around their neighborhood referring to themselves as "The Hood Trio". Harry Potter is the symbol of innocence for Starr and Khalil. Their mutual love for Harry Potter was what kept their childhood imagination alive. This changed once Natasha was murdered.
( In the 2018 film, they make an emphasis on the Harry Potter wands as a symbol of their innocence. When Natasha was murdered, Starr kept both of their wands stored away together. Having to witness one of their best friends' death made them have to deal with trauma, their own morality, and the dangers of living in Garden Heights at the age of ten years old, Starr and Khalil had her childhood shortened when Natasha was killed. Khalil kept his stored away as well until he was murdered. This is when Starr is allowed to take his wand and store it with hers' and Natasha's).

-Overall, Khalil's story and connections are fairly similar. Almost all his lines in the 2018 film adaption are line for line from the book with one key storyline difference.

- The 2018 film adaption, makes more of the fact that Khalil was Starr's first crush and first kiss. In the film, the two exchange a kiss prior to officer 115 pulling them over.

- In the last chapter of "The Hate U Give", Starr names the real-life victims that have been killed in instances of police brutality towards black Americans.

- This book did an excellent job of capturing the reality of these situations in stories in a fictional setting.

- Khalil, like real-life victims of police killings and brutality, was murdered by the police and had his reputation tarnished after the death by the media.

- Khalil, as a character, captures the themes of racial injustice, blackness in America, the power of voices, and the power in society. How class and race can a play a role in if you deserved to be murdered.
