For my art piece, I chose The Penitent Magdalene by Georges de La Tour. This painting depicts intense emotion while also portraying an eerie silence and stillness. The subject of the painting seems to be reflecting on her sins and mistakes as she holds a skull which could be used to symbolize the result of turning away from Catholicism. The candle can be thought to represent the light that Catholicism brings.

I love the use of light in the painting where the two figures in the center are well lit as well as the lady in the background. For this lady, there is an intense shine or reflection that emits from her golden clothing. This detail of light to create drama in a scene was an important aspect of baroque art.

I chose the statue "David" by Bernini because it truly encompasses the specialities of Baroque art given it is captured at a moment in time, its diagonal lines, its emotion and realism, and it's energy and movement. I also think this piece is a good example of Baroque art because it can easily be compared to Michelangelo's "David" statue from the Renaissance, and how they are both different in virtually every way. This goes to show the uniqueness of Baroque art.

I observed that Baroque music often has long melodic lines, layered melodies, and ornamental/decorative notes added to enhance the style along with by a more rhythmic accompaniment. A good example of this is Scarlatti's Keyboard Sonata in D minor.

I chose Girl with the pearl earring by Johannes Vermeer because it embodies the clearness and simplicity of the art. In addition, the word "baroque" means irregular pearl or stone in Portuguese, so the pearl earring represents the literal definition of baroque art. In addition to this, the clearness of the skin and the lack of action in the portrait represents baroque art as a whole because of its simplicity, clearness, and light.

I chose "David with the Head of Goliath" by the Italian Baroque Artist Carvaggio. I feel that this piece of artwork reflects a lot of signature Baroque motifs. For one, this piece is imbued with a pensive, almost regretful emotion. Second, this piece reflects a singular moment of time and feels as if David had only recently severed the head of Goliath and is taking in the gravity of his actions. Third, this piece reflects a sobering perspective of an otherwise glorified myth. In this sense, it feels more real and less like a fake fairy tale.
