Directions: Using writing, pictures, and/or video, analyze how the graphic novel elements in Persepolis convey the author's overall message about one of the essential questions topics in the text-- (1) Childhood: What affects us growing up into adulthood (2) cultural identity: How do individuals balance the demands and requirements of society with their own beliefs (3) Individual within a Revolution: How does a person survive in and make sense of a conflicted world? (4) Beliefs: How do we form our beliefs and what influences them?

Essential Question: 4: Beliefs
This technique demonstrates the essential question about beliefs as she is questioning her belief in God because Anoosh has been executed. She wonders where God was in all of this turmoil; thus, she is shouting at him to get out of her life. She is conflicted about her beliefs and the death is influencing her conflict with God.
Graphic Novel Elements: In this picture, the Speech Bubble shape is being used to show the extent of Marjane's anger as she is shouting at God. Her dialogue has an angry tone, and having the speech bubble be jagged emphasizes her shouting tone. Her trust has turned to anger, and this is conveyed in the jagged, shouting shape of the Speech Bubble.

It answers the essential question #3. He has to escape and he chooses to stand up for what he believes in.

Graphic novel technique: the technique used is black and white. The black represents the miserable journey to freedom. He is cold and is suffering but he won't stop. He keeps trudging along as shown with the footprints left in the white that represents the snow and the light guiding his way.

This answers essential question #3
She is just so tired, she feels hopeless. She doesn't know who she is. She wants rest. She doesn't believe things can get worse. But they always can. Bombs start going off. Her world is at war. She is stuck in the middle.

Graphic novel: this relates to graphic weight because she is floating and it smaller then the background. It looks like her world is falling apart and she's just lying there tired and done.

revolutionThis shows essential question #1
She feels all grown up because she is defying her parents and smoking her first cigarette. She decides that she is all grown up now. She has her own beliefs and wants to make her own choices. Not listen to her parents. She has had to grow up quick with everything going on with the government. Faster then most kids. Instead of having fun she had to worry about the and that made her grow up faster.

The graphic novel element is faces. Her face shows maturity and how she doesn't care about obeying the rules anymore. She looks independent and fearless.

Essential question #4: beliefs. Her mother is in the protest standing up for what she believes in, as her face shows she is very passionate about the topic. Her mother's facial expression looks powerful and determined. This would pour on to her daughter's beliefs.

The mother would easily influence her daughter with that face. Not in a bad way. It is powerful. If her daughter sees her mother fighting for something so strong, it may influence the way she sees and believes things.

Essential Question (childhood): This panel expresses this essential question because after the Shah has now changed the rules and made it mandatory to wear the veil, many children act differently about it. Personal beliefs definitely affect our change into adulthood and how we behave, especially with change.

Graphic Novel Elements (faces): In this panel, many different facial expressions are shown by many different children. In the scene their facial expressions explain how they feel about wearing the veil. Just by looking at a face, you can tell wether they're with or against the veil.

Essential Question (beliefs): This image clearly represents the essential question: how do we form our beliefs and what influences them? This picture shows the family connected. We know that Marjane, like most people, gets her beliefs from her parents. This picture proves that her and her family are on the same wavelength and they are connected.

Graphic Novel Elements (hands and feet): The hands and the feet in this picture show excitement and happiness. The position of hands and feet can easily change the image of ones mood, and in this drawing you can't tell that they are happy and jumping around.

Essential Question (cultural identity): This panel shows a crowd of protestors demonstrating for what they believe in. Individuals balance the demands of society and their own beliefs by obeying when they need to and rebelling when they can.

Graphic Novel Elements (caption/text): The caption "Down with the King!" pops out at you when looking at the panel. It is clear that this is what the protestors were shouting and they were shouting in quite aggressively and loudly. It is portrayed as that because it is in all caps and very large and bold.

Cultural Identity (#2). : Her and all of her schoolmates are dramatic about the veil. They have strong opinions and are stuck to what they think. They do not need the "government" or the school to tell them what is right. They already have opinions on what they think is right, and they are against the veil.
The panel confirms what they are thinking and saying inside their quotes. It explains that the kids did not like wearing it, and that the veil was something they did not understand the meaning of wearing it why it was a rule.
