The last stanza of the poem "Incident" is ironic to the title because that one incident with the boy calling Countee Cullen the "n" word changed his life tremendously. That one single incident that occurred changed his life as a young boy because the "n" word makes African American people feel worthless and non-human. As an African American girl, I have experience many name callings, but I have to keep telling myself those are just words. I honestly believe that if you are not taught by your parents to be strong-willed and to have a backbone then what people say to you are going to hurt you a lot. My parents have always told me that I am a beautiful African American girl and no one will ever change that, so don't listen to what people have to say about you because in the end, us parents will have your back and be there for you no matter what. Now every time Countee Cullen remembers the times he had in Baltimore, this incident will be 1 of his constant memories.
