Status, authority, responsibilities, gender, training, and nurse/physician cultures were found as factors that influence effective communication. In essence there are many unconscious behaviors that contribute to the problem. It's my belief that there could be a significant reduction in miscommunication if staff is required to take ongoing training on the subject. The more aware you are that there is room for improvement, the more opportunity you have to improve. I think that would help to create a culture of teams who are proactive to communicating better.
