Chapter 4 of the Gavazzi text discusses the dynamics of relationship between the family and the adolescent. It is important to have a balance of autonomy and connection during the adolescents developmental stages. The adolescent stage of development is a critical period of identify formation and who that child is becoming, it is also a time when the adolescent has a need for independence and a need for family support.

Parents can best support their teens by having effective communication, boundaries, and emotional responsiveness to the teen and their emotions. The Gavazzi text also offers research on the behavior of adolescents showing that parental involvement and family cohesion impacts adolescent outcomes in areas of academics, emotional well being and risk behaviors.

Gavazzi, S.
