Some people believe that farmers are uneducated or labeled as "rednecks". One of the farmers in this film said that he went to college and a majority of the farmers he knew were also college educated. His wife enjoys making their house look nice and shopping name brands. Just because they might live in the country, further away from the outlet malls and the busy city doesn't mean that they are uncultured. Farming now is far from the Little House on the Prairie times, but it seems there is still a preconception about farmers that remains. The article I connected with this quote is about providing farming education in schools. Last year I visited my friend's pig farm and immediately started crying when I saw the baby pigs. They were screaming and running away from us, which my friend told me was normal because they want the pigs to fear them and not get attached. When I am eating chicken or pig I am not associating it with the animal or the work put in to bring this to my table, but when I am forced to look at where my food comes from it really puts everything into perspective. They don't know what their income will come from that. Their assets get trapped because they invested so much into their crops. The friend of mine who is a farmer relies on pigs for his income, but if his corn crop were to fail, then they would not have enough feed for their pigs. They recently have become more conscious about GMOs, organic produce, and have tried to really track where their food is coming from. They are really good friends with this family that has started a program where you sign up for what foods you would like for that week, and then they have assigned delivery locations where the customers can go to pick up their food. They pointed out that the majority of farmers don't treat animals the way those videos depict. This goes back to the misconceptions between the general public and farmers. Some people think that if one bad seed exists, then the majority must be bad as well, which couldn't be further from the truth. Since I am from a small town I know quite a few farmers and most of them were emotionally invested in the animals.
