The separation of men, women, children, families being broken apart, was not easy. As they listened to the officers this is all that they heard. “Men to the left! Women to the right” (Wiesel 29). This quote illustrates a choiceless decision because they didn’t have a choice to which side they wanted to go on with their family. If you decided not to listen to the orders, you had to face many consequences which included death.

3. As they were separating families, mothers were in charge of taking their children with them. When they took their children with them, the officers made majority of them go to the gas chambers which was also referred to as “showers”. They would also burn them in the fire.  “He did not wish to see his only son go up into flames” (Wiesel 33). This quote shows that many family members had to face the pain of losing a loved one just because they were Jewish. In this case, with it being his only son it was even more hard to witness his death so soon. With that being said, there was no way that anyone could stop their family members from being killed, unfortunatley.

But I had no choice” (Wiesel 78). 

This shows that Ellie had no choice for whether or not he wanted his foot to be operated on. There was no discussion needed after the doctor had talked about his plan. Ellie had to cross a mental border which he wasn't ready to cross, but still had to it. 

2. “They were forced to dig big huge trenches” (Wiesel 6).

Ellie and the others did not have a choice of what they wanted to do. They were forced to work and one of their tasks was to dig big trenches, which was something they weren’t used to doing. Most of them even had no skills of digging a trench in the past which greatly impacted their identity.

No. The man sounded angry. Not fifty. You’re forty. Do you hear? Eighteen and forty” (Wiesel 30). This was a choiceless decision because when his father started to say how old he really was, the guard became angry and told him that he has a new age which was forty. Both Ellie and his father had to listen to him, or else things could’ve gotten worse. It affected their identity because they had to lie about themselves in order to survive.

2. "Don't yell, my son . . . Have pity on your old father. . . Let me rest here . . . a little . . . I beg of you, I'm so tired . . . no more strength. . ." (Wiesel 105). This quote shows that Ellie's father unfortunately was on his death bed and there was nothing that could be done that could help him get better.  It was a choiceless decision because he didn't have the strength to put himself back together. It affected his identity because it made him look like he was dead and that he blended in with the corpses around him. Sadly later on, Ellie's father ends up passing away leaving Ellie behind.

The first picture shows Tax papers. EVERYONE has to pay taxes. If you choose not to pay them then the IRS will charge you a penalty for each month you don't pay your taxes. On top of that, you will have to pay interest on the unpaid taxes.

2. The second picture shows a group of sisters. This shows that you cannot choose your siblings it just happens naturally. 

3. Lastly, the third picture shows that when you are summoned to go to Jury Duty you do not have a choice and you have to go. If you don't go you will have to face the consequence of going to jail.

Holocaust to the real world today, there were a lot of choiceless decisions that the people had to face back then. If you were sick and you wanted to see a doctor, they would send you right back to work because you didn't have to get surgery. Today, with the help of advance medical treatments, they will be able to give you the medications that you need.  

2. Nowadays we live in a democratic society whereby we are allowed to choose our leaders and not have them chosen for us. Looking back at the time period during the Holocaust, many countries were communistic and people living there were told who there next leader was going to be. The leader was decided on based on the conquering country.
