The Vietnamese faced many challenges battling such a large power, including shortages of munitions, guns, and artillery. Under an order by Vo Nguyen Giap the general that led the war, 60,000 untrained men armed with only 40,000 rifles fought at war. However, this was more than France and Giap had many strategies to utilize his surroundings as much as possible.
