1. I do see a correlation between student engagement and real world application. When combining the two, student engagement is heightened as well as motivation.
2. Demographics play a role in the students ability to fully understand and grasp the topics being learned and the connection it will have in real world scenarios. This is predominantly because of the experiences that the students may or may not have in order to make further abstract connections to a potential use of the skill.

1. Yes, I see a correlation between student engagement and real world application. When students see how this can be or will be useful in their everyday life, it heightens student engagement. When introducing something new, it is often a good idea to tell them when they will use it in real life to get them engaged in the topic.

2. Demographics play a role in certain topics because of exposure. Children from different backgrounds are exposed to different things at different times. When asking students to make real world connections you have to be sure students are able to make that connection. I used a beach as an example in a lesson once and I had a student who had never been to the beach. These are the things we have to take into account as a teacher in order to be sure the hit every child.

1. Yes, there is a correlation between student engagement and real world application. When students feel that they connect to the topic to their everyday life they automatically spark some sort of interest. When they are interested about what they are learning about they are more likely to be engaged and take more out of it to apply for what's to come. They are able to take the knowledge learned and apply it to situation outside of school because they now understand how to.
2. Demographics play a huge role in teaching certain topics. As teachers we need to think about how our students may have been brought up differently or have had different experiences thus far. As my students are very young they have not experienced as much as I have. While teaching them I need to take into consideration that when I give examples that they are able to connect. For example, if I give a writing example about how I have been to Disney World I need to think about who might not have been there and relate it to some other amusement parks they have been to or even town carnivals. It is really important that as teachers with think about the area where our students are coming from.

I LOVED both of these articles - I recently reworked the 2 lessons in the brains: Transfer and Sense/Meaning - both of these articles fit right into those ideas.
1. As far as the first - student engagement vs real world - absolutely - I often tell my nieces & nephews to 'hang in there' when they get into college. It has been my experience that as we go through the general studies in undergrad programs - we do 'just ok.' But when we get to the course in our field - it gets much easier - not because the topic is easier, but because we are engaged in the learning - this is what interests us!

2. Demographics = huge influence. One bitter sweet story - we had an immigrant family call up and ask if their children were allowed to come to school on March 17th - The classes were having parties and the family wasn't sure if they were allowed to attend.

Yes, I see a correlation between student engagement and real world application. It makes students remember more what they are learning and sometimes even encourage them to learn deeper and more about the topic they are learning about.

Demographics play a role in the relevance of certain topics. It shows how students have different backgrounds and experiences. It affects on how they understand certain topics and what they feel about them. I think teachers can decrease the negative affect by knowing their students more, which helps in preparing students to these topics and guide them to explore them in the right ways and opinions.

I completely agree that student engagement and real world applications have a correlation. Teaching math, students always want to know where they will use this 'stuff' in the real world. I enjoy teaching Geometry more because I can connect more topics to the real world.

Demographics play a role in relevance to topics because in order to connect to a certain topic you need to understand and connect to it. The better students connect to a topic, the more likely they are to understand and apply their knowledge of it.

The better students can relate to the material being taught the more likely they are to participate and be invested in the lessons. The most asked question is always "who cares?" or "why do we need to learn this?" The better we as teacher articulate the connections between the lesson and the real world the more interested and engaged the students are in the lesson.
Demographics play a role because you need to know your audience in order to gear the real world relationships to the specific set of students you have in order to maximize your engagement.

Deb Schultes

There is a definite correlation between student engagement and real world application. With anything we are trying to learn, if we can see how is it applicable to us (or anything related to us), then we are much more engaged.
Demographics play a major role in relevance. Our students can be made up of very diverse demographics. As such, we must be cognizant of this in order to make sure all students can understand and make the proper connections.

Students are available to disgust and remain lesson material when they have developed a sense and meaning to the content. It is helpful to students to inform learners how classroom skills can be beneficial to the development of their out- of-classroom skills. There is also power is making the content relatable with examples, if a student does not fully understand the lesson how are they able to process and retain this knowledge. I see direct correlation between student engagement and real word application. Demographics does play a role in the relevance of certain topics, it is important for educators to understand their student population and community to use relevant examples in the classroom.
