Intelligence is evolving through out the book and a lot more in chapter 5. In the beginning of the book intelligence was more of a key factor. They were trying to build a community like having food, shelter, and most importantly create a society. Now later in the book it is becoming less relevant as their needs increase. "We want meat" (Golding 51), says Jack. Intelligence is staring to fade away. Jack is more focusing on wants like wanting to get meat, rather then needs like building a shelter and doing things they need to survive. They already have food, but all Jack wants is meat, when really they meed other things more. Another example is, "Bollocks to the rules." (Golding 91) This is another example of Jack is mad that he is not the leader and is just trying to get everyone to agree with him and never with Ralph.

Savagery Evolving by Ronnie and Mariah

Savagery is evolving through chapters 1-5. This is shown because in the beginning the characters weren't acting like savages or being violent. For example in chapter 1 Jack couldn't kill a pig because he was scared. "They were left looking at each other and the place of terror. Jack's face was white under the freckles."(Golding 31) But now in chapter 4 when the hunters kill a pig they celebrate it. "Then Maurice pretended to be the pig and ran squealing...and the hunters, circling pretended to beat him . As they danced, they sang."(Golding 75) This quote shows that they are getting more violent and savage.

In the beginning, the boys were civilized because everyone was working together, for instance, building the fire at the top of the mountain. "Ralph, I'll split up the choir - my hunters, that is - into groups, and we'll be responsible for keeping the fire going" (Golding 43). As the story progresses, the topic of civilization evolved. The boys were working together to survive. In civilization, the only way to have a society is to have order and rules. Later, the boys became less civilized, "There was a ship. Out there. You said you'd keep the fire going and you let it out!" (Golding 70). The hunters job was to keep the fire going, but they failed at their job to do that since they got distracted from hunting. The fire was important because it was their way to get help. In other words, the boys became less civilized, and more savage.

In the beginning they relied on intelligence more then anything. Intellligence was important, because it was a key factor in survival. The topic evolves from being essestial to being the least important. In chapter 1, when Piggy makes suggestions like, "We can use this to call the others. Have a meeting." (Golding 16). Ralph listens to Piggy's suggestions without any doubt, and firmly believes his ideas. As the chapter moves on, they tend to ignore Piggy's decisions. " You didn't ought to have let that fire out...' You would, would you? Fatty!" (Golding 71). The group slowly moves away from Piggy, and do not think that Piggy's decisions are not as significant as before.

(Golding 33) Through out the chapters they increased themselves. Now in chapter 5 it looks like no one is following the rules. Ralph says "All this I meant to say. Now I've said it. You voted me for chief. Now you do what I say!" (Golding 90)Ralph is furious because no body follows his orders consistently and they also lack respect for him.
