Abstract

The current study deals with the matter of fantasy as shown in the context of literary translation, more especifically the translator’s work with proper names that have semantic meaning in the work of Brandon Sanderson. For this study, the investigator will consider Shadows of Self, Rythm of War, Dawnshard, and Warbreaker. The main objective is to compare the different translation techniques (Hurtado, 2001) that were used to deal with the problems presented regarding the proper names. In order to accomplish this goal, the investigator built a corpus which gathers all the units to be analized; in addition, the techniques were categorized to observe which of those were the most used. It was concluded that, in the majority of cases, the translator adapted the names to fit in wiith the standards of the target culture. Thanks to this study, it was possible to analize the translation of proper names in the epic fantasy genre, and it would be most recommendable to conduct further research on the topic in order to develop a proper methodology to solve this type of translation problems.

This is a quantitative research that compares the quality of the Latin-American Spanish subtitles and the Latin-American Spanish dubbing of the British TV show Doctor Who. The aim of this study is to discover whether the quality of subtitles was any different from the quality of the dubbing. The case study considered 5 episodes of the fifth season of the New Doctor Who, with the subtitles and the dubbing to Spanish being provided by the streaming platform Netflix. For this purpose, a chart was designed with each quality criteria having an assignment percentage. The results of this study indicated that the subtitles had a higher quality in comparison to the dubbing. To prove if this occurs in other seasons, the subtitles should be analyzed with the help of a similar chart like the one used in this research.

Keywords: Doctor Who, subtitles, dubbing, quality

In the present thesis, we will be searching how much does an interpreter intervene and change a message when the user has little knowledge of Spanish, and the speaker has high knowledge of English and uses dense terminology. For this we will take a group of 50 interpreters of public services specifically in the health area, because it is the most problematic in Chile, country of the study. First, we are going to run some interviews to the participant to know what the more difficult part of their job is, how common is for them to find illiterate people, etc. After this we will analyze their answers to structure a conversation between a patient and a medic, for interpreters to work on, this conversation is going to be flexible to follow the interpreter lead in the conversation. Then we will do a questionnaire to ask them why they modified the message the way they did and to see how effective their interpretations were.

Keywords: Interpreter, Public Services, Health Area, Chile

Euphoria is considered one of HBO's most controversial series due to the topics it covers, many of which are still considered taboo by Latin American society (drug use, sex, sexuality, among others). The aim of this study is to analyze the use of neutral Spanish and the approach of taboo and offensive language in the creation of subtitles for the teen drama Euphoria. The research methodology is qualitative with a theoretical framework and corpus analysis followed by the contextualization and definition of the terms, and the analysis and comparison of the subtitles (English, Latin Spanish and Peninsular Spanish). Unlike Spain, neutral Spanish suffers an overgeneralization, losing important semantic weight in order to reach more than 20 countries, which in some cases can be confused as censorship.
