"A mother is best. A mother knows what is inside you"- An-mei Hsu Pg. 209

This quote is important because it reveals the important theme in Chinese culture how one's mother has the most insight of their children, so they always know what is best. It helps emphasize children's needs for their parents rather than other strangers like a psychiatrist.

" 'No tell me in Chinese,' I interrupt. 'Really I can understand.' " - Jing-mei Woo Pg. 321

When Jing-mei said this to her father when he was about to tell her what happened to her mother, it showed her development in her character. In the beginning she wanted to be just like the other American girls and not appreciate her parents' Chinese vulture, so they would always talk to her in English. When it came time to listen to her father say what happened to her mother, she learned to appreciate her Chinese culture and listen to her dad talk in Chinese.

This quote shows a turning point in the story where Jing-mei realized that she wants to be her own person rather than trying to be who her mom wants. This is a a major point in the story because it is where Jing-mei's character develops from feeling like she always disappoints her mother to feeling free from her mothers Chinese expectations.

This detail is important because suspense was built up until this point where Ying-Ying was able to tell the moon lady her wish. This detail revealed how Ying-Ying's perception of the Moon Lady was wrong, but it did not affect Ying-Ying's wishes.

This quote is important because it reveals how Rose Hsu's will to save her marriage was never strong in the first place. It helps show how it is also Rose's fault that her marriage is falling apart because she did not take her mother's advise.
