A global citizen is someone who is aware of a world outside of them. Their identity transcends geography and political borders. They understand that there is more to see and know outside of their home city, state, and country. Along with this, a Global Citizen takes an active role in their community to help and work with others to make our overall planet more equal, impartial, and sustainable.

"As a citizen of the world, I stand only with Truth and my conscience is my only leader. This is the only way to peace and justice on earth.” - Suzy Kassem

"The world is our family and our family is our responsibility.” - Abhijit Naskar

Having a global perspective means that someone can think about a situation and relate it to the rest of the world, because in the end we are all somehow connected. This mindset allows us to learn from others, create new opportunities, and become more informed as a society. It helps us learn, teach, and observe not only our culture but cultures all around the world. This benefits us, because when knowing what is happening a crossed the globe it allows for us to take our next steps in life diligently knowing that what we might do next could affect others somewhere else.

For me personally, having a global perspective helps humazie people a crossed the world. When we talk about how things could affect others we only think within our country and not other places that we haven't been. Other countries and their citizens almost seem imaginary. So, having a global perspective helps me realize that they aren't imaginary and are in fact real people.

I think that we can really aid our students when it comes to helping them become global citizens and develop a global perspective. I have come up with three ideas that I think could help students develop this mindset!

Morning Meeting
During morning meeting we really focus on what is happening outside of the classroom by asking students to play games and get to know each other. Usually this activities are very culturally American, so I think that students would benefit from learning different activities that derive from different types of cultures! This way students can be exposed to cultures and ideas outside of their own. It can help them become more open minded as well while knowing that there are different ways of thinking outside of the United States.

Word Problems
Many times in word problems that we could see in a math or science class they use names of people to help illustrate the problem better. Most likely these names are traditional American names like Sarah, Robert, or James. I think that if we incorporated names from different cultures it would help students realize that there is more outside their small towns in the United States. It would also help normalize different cultures, which could create a new wave of open minded individuals who are willing to understand life outside the United States.

Celebrations
Throughout the year our schools allow many celebrations however, those celebrations are primarily aimed towards our Christian students. In my elementary school we talked about different holidays like Hanukkah and Kwanzaa however, we never celebrated them like we do Christmas. I understand that in Christianity is the most followed practice, however I think that students are missing out on important knowledge that could help them succeed in the future. So, maybe have students get one celebration party during the seasons that include all the holidays happening at the time. Their party can consist of watching movies from different cultures and listening to cultural music, while eating snacks that are inspired by that holiday. Students could really benefit from this.
