*Gives the opportunity to give positive feedback along with criticism. 
*Is less discouraging in the sense of what scale the student will be graded on, as in they may not be as upset as they would if they received a straight novice.

*students may get confused on the grading scale if not explained thoroughly.

I also like the idea of pointing to evidence as to why a student is behind or exceeding. Students can get feedback and are all held to the same level. A con could be that it is too simple.
