The central and significant conflict in this book is this boy of 17 years old is on the run from Recruiters by himself due to the rest of his family being separated and taken away from him. This is because in the book his father gets taken away as he tries to fend for his family. Later after this his mother gets taken away from his brother and him as well. Now they are left on their own and have to survive the recruits. As they believe they are finally safe Frenchie's brother says, "' You are going to climb out the back window and ono the roof, as low down as you can get"'

( Dimaline 2). The recruits are the reason why his brother and rest of family are being taken away which isn't fair because now Frenchie has to live his whole life worrying about them.

The details that are offered is the background on Frenchie's family and their separation. Frenchie describes how his family was being chased by the school truancy officers which they called Recruiters. As they hid, Frenchie's dad left with the Council and his mother left for the Old Friendship Center where she was later never found. Frenchie and his brother, Mitch, were then left alone with no one to guide them, and they ended up in a tree house. Frenchie "imagined the school truancy officers - Recruiters [they] called them - coming for us, noses to the wind, sunglasses reflecting the row of houses behind which [Frenchie and Mitch] nestled in [their] wooden dream home" (Dimaline 2). The Recruiters later heard Mitch and Frenchie in the treehouse, and Mitch told Frenchie to jump out window of the tree house to safety. Mitch sacrificed himself so that his brother could live. Frenchie also described his dreams to reunite with his family and be able to see again. He had hoped to be captured by the Recruiters n hope to find his family back at the school. However, Frenchie later realized that he needed to survive for them. He encountered a group of people that were not related and soon settled with them. Frenchie learned of the group's history and set off to continue the journey with them, struggling to survive.

The tone is revealed as both soothing and alert as while Frenchie and the others are on alert for Recruiters, they are still able to laugh and calm down. "I laughed out loud, a desperate sound that made me laugh harder so that I had to stop, hands on my shaking knees, and wait out the wave of giggles that made it impossible to trudge on"(14). They are able to be relieved from this caution some times and it helped them sane. In addition, it shows how they could be happy even though they are running for their lives from the Recruiters. The subtext that is evident in tone the narrator or author takes is distributing and rough. The mood is suspenseful as they are able to get caught in any time so they have to be careful.

Running is a symbol that represents the struggles and difficulties that people experience. Wab, before she joined the group, has family problems and was alone most of her life. Her mother was an alcoholic and could not provide Wab the life that she wanted. Wab instead created her own business to "run away" from her problems. In exchange for delivering mail or running errands, she would be paid in food. Wab "ran for a whole year before [the men] caught [her]" (82). When the men caught her, she was put into a chamber that was ice cold and empty. She experienced getting tortured and still had the scars to show it. This event would typically be traumatizing for most people. However, the fact that Wab got up and ran shows her strength and how she did not let that experience get in the way of her whole life.

Walking in to the woods Frenchie saw, "The smoke coiled above the treetops, a single cumulus bloom of grey for enough to the west that it looked manageable. Below it the trees were moving in impossible directions, shaking back and forth, then swaying life fainting giants, then popping out of sight"(96). This situation creates a suspicion into what could happen, possibly being capturers in sight. By seeing weird movement, Frenchie, along with the others could be in great danger. This makes the readers think about the situation Frenchie and his companions are in because of what is being noticed by Frenchie. The readers can imagine that rather than nature making the movement of the trees, it's the people they're avoiding, or other people like them. Another example of imagery includes when Rose went into Frenchie's tent, and Frenchie, "swallowed hard and breathed slow and steady, like you do when you have fame in sight and you don't want to scare it off. I hoped the concentration would take my excitement away. but then she moved her hand to cover mine and I almost died"(72). By Frenchie's excitement, it shows the intimacy between the two characters, possibly which can go further.

¨[Frig] reminded me of Wab that day back at the Four Winds: distorted somehow... we didn´t know that he was an animal we had yet to imagine could exist" (128-129).
This imagery impacts the reader because it show the reader the development of characters. When Frenchie and the others in the group first met Frig, they found him as a quiet and misleading person. However, as time went on, they began to see Frig's true colors and found him to be someone with a dangerous, animal-like spirit. The purpose it serves in the plot is that there is a subplot to the story. This allows readers to understand different perspectives from other people and could lead to inferences of what occurs towards the end of the book.

Running away from the enemies, they, "can't make light tonight, so we need to hurry if we want to get camp settled in the barn" (148). This impacts the plot, for rather than getting captured by the recruiters they are away safely, or at least temporarily. These people are in the hands of safety, hidden away from their capturers.

The most significant conflict in this section of the text are the Recruiters, usually white people who harvest the bone marrow of Indigenous people to regain their ability to dream. The plot of the story and the characters are all driven by the imminent threat of the Recruiters. The main character, Frenchie, along with the rest of his “family” are running away from Recruiters and anyone who is affiliated with them. Recently in the text, RiRi, the youngest of the bunch was killed in a kidnapping attempt by Indians affiliated with the Recruiters. RiRi’s death brought upon grief and despair on the whole family, especially on Wab and Minerva. Minerva became extremely distraught, as it brought back memories bad memories, and had slept in a open area where she would later be taken by Recruiters. Both RiRi and Minerva were lost to the Recruiters, in some way or another. The Recruiters heavily impacts the characters in the text because serves as their driving conflict. The story is driven by the threat of Recruiters, even when they aren’t physically there. Conflicts arise when there are either Recruiters or people affiliated with Recruiters. This conflict impacts the reader as it creates a sense of suspense and keeps the story from going stale

A tree house and a bag of Doritos are part of symbolism found in the book. The tree stood as great protection for the family, symbolizing the house as safety from others. The tree meant a lot for the family for it helped them survive. The boys described the treehouse as, "It was high like a snapper hole so we could see if anyone was coming for us"(2). This impacts the reader because they realize the situation in which Mitch is in. The reader can infer how dangerous the people are in the world. The text leads the reader to feel worried because Mitch, the only family left is taken away for the sake of his survival. This impacts the plot because it reveals how the two siblings are in danger, hiding from people after them. Due to the treehouse, the boys were able to remain safe until discovered. Frenchie now needs to learn to find his own way to survive. Another symbol in this story is Doritos. The boys cherished its taste, for they barely have it. The boys filled with the flavor said, "It was real. My mouth filled with spit, and a rotten hole in one of my molers yelled its displeasure" (1). it seemed as a dream, symbolizing something that is "unreal" in the boys eyes. This impacts the plot for it shows the boys position in society. By being overwhelmed by Doritos, it reveals how the boys did not have much in life, being very appreciative. The boys in other words, did not live a normal life.

Frenchie walking back from the party and newcomers, he heard an echo. Spotting Miig, Isaac's voice was heard. Isaac revealing himself, Miig and Frenchie was in awe, for they didn't think they would see each other once again. Seeing Miigwans weep due to happiness, Frenchie, "understood just what [they] would do for each other, just what [they] would do for the ebb and pull the dream, the biggeer dream that held [them] all. Anything. Everything"(231). The point of view of Frenchie impacts the reader for it reveals how much the people mean to him. By having lost so much already, he couldn't bare another lost. Loosing someone, results heartbreak for him. Just seeing one of the past people of their group, brings them so much happiness, for they never thought it would ever happen once again. In other words, Frenchie saw the importance and impact the others had on each other, and how much happiness they bring into their life. The benefits to this perspective is that Frenchie is the main character of this book. Having known his experiences and challenges, by being able to go into his mind, the readers are able to read what he is thinking and feeling. The narrator is reliable for he talks about his experiences talked about in the book, along with his thoughts and actions.

Conflicts arise when "the Indigenous people of North America are hunted for bone marrow, which carries the key to recovering something the rest of the population lost: the ability to dream".The reader understands that race and ethnic backgrounds create the illusion that Whites and Natives are two totally different species.

The theme that emerged throughout this book was that with great perseverance, one can achieve happiness and peace. Over the course of this book, there had been many events where Frenchie and his group hid from the Recruiters. They all had one goal in mind, to get the dreams. In this last portion of the text, Frenchie and his group continue to persevere through the difficult times. In the end, Frenchie had a realization for what his group, which became his family, would do for each other. Frenchie also revealed that he is walking and running to reach or find his family again in hopes of finding them so that they could be together again.
Frenchie always presented himself as an older brother figure to RiRi as she was a young girl that is growing up in the time of the apocalypse and she was just trying to make sense of the world of chaos she lives in.

The main character, Frenchie, is shown to the reader little by little as the reader gets to know more about him as we read the book. The portion of text that stands out the most to give a sense of who Frenchie is in the text is when Derrick takes Rose by the hand to dance with her. Frenchie narrates his thoughts as he remarks on how "The cave darkened as my eyes narrowed, what the well was she doing with that jerk? And why she was smiling so big? I puffed out my chest a bit, remembering that I still had the longest braids, even in this larger group. That made me a better Indian, after all" (190). Frenchie acts impulsivley and because of his strong emotions, causing him to not be able to conjure any rational thought. Frenchie's long braid and puffed out chest shows the way he takes pride in the dominance and senority he asserts.

The most significant conflict for the family was the past. As they are being hunted by Recruiters, they are remembering their past of how they were treated before. Wab had her legs cut off to make sure that she would never run again. This conflict affects her as it makes her unable to forget about what happened and she might not be able to run normally again. Minerva remembered of the person she love dearly, and as of now he is ded, she still is sad and might be emotionally broken as of the love on passes away.

Wab was in a difficult relationship with her mother as she was neglected and raped constantly. Wab and her mother soon had to move into a dumpster as their home had unfortunately burned down. Wab took up the job of a messenger service for others to use but was soon captured by regular people who wanted to stop her from working. The people stopped her by cutting across one of her eyes, imprisoning, and raping her. These details are important because Wab was presented to the reader and the group as a brooding, beautiful, and closed off person that just made sure everybody ate. Wab was a mysterious character to all and seemed to be close to only Chi-boy.

Throughout the text, Frenchie is continuously motivated by his family, especially protecting his family. He acts very wary and is always careful about who to trust. In any situation there was “always this feeling, an understanding more than emotion, of protection”(180). This type of protective attitude is what makes him Francis. Through acting protective Frenchie hopes that no else will leave him die and leave him all alone. He scared of being alone because his father, mother, and brother all died and left him behind. Even though his father was revealed to be alive, he still doesn’t want to risk losing his father for a second time. Frenchie has a lot of pressure on him since he has two families- his father and the group that he bonded with over the course of the book.
