Wonder: I wonder what is the relationship between the girls? Is Annemarie the eldest? Observe: While the older girls were afraid and knew to stand still and not antagonise the soldiers, Kirsti was bold and brave.

Notice: Kirsti is clearly unhappy with the whole situation and she scowls at the soldiers and the 2 older girls. She is quite brazen.

Wonder: I wonder why she isn't more guarded, afraid. Annemarie heard it often enough before, but it had never been directed at her until now. (page 11)

Observe: She has heard German soldiers using the word "stop" many times. 
Notice: Familiarity typically comes with comfort. When you are familiar with someone, you become more at ease. In this case, it is the other way round. Which shows the kind of negative experiences Annemarie has had with the German soldiers.

Observe: It appears that it is the calm after a very traumatic or negative experience.
Notice: Kirsti's knowledge and experience with the German soldiers is a stark contrast to the one Annemarie and Ellen had.
